Hi

But nintendo has been making a big deal about the virtual console. The must care.

I think that nintendo is waiting for more people to own wii's. THEN they'll sue.

Also, the games aren't worth 0$, they are worth the amount that they are being sold for. They are being sold on the virtual console.

And Nintendo is the one company that knows people don't always want the latest and greatest. Look at how they ported all the old snes games to the gba. Look at the classic nes seris. Look at new super mario brothers.

Nintendo has a history of porting old games to new platforms. They've been doing it for a long time.

If they've been porting old games to new platforms for a long time, then they should've had incentives to sue ROM pirates for a long time as well, and the Wii Virtual Console should still not be a big change in their legal strategy.

Nintendo isn't going to sue people who download roms. Why? Because the virtual console is a huuuuuuge success for nintendo. Much like everyone used napster to get free music because there were no other choice besides paying a lot for a CD you only wanted one song for, then itunes came out and you could get just the songs you wanted for cheaper... The virtual console is doing the same for old games. I have a ton of old NES/SNES/N64 carts, and quite a few roms... The moment my favorites came out on VC I bought them (mariokart 64 being a great example of this)

Hi

Okay. Good point. Errr... sorry if it seems like I'm asking question after question...

Quote from: "Hi"How come the nds doesn't need a modchip in order to run homebrew and "backups"?

was nintendo just careless about security, or is there something else? Is it a thing with handheld devieces? None of the gb's ever needed one and I don't think the psp does (although, you have to downgrade your firmware) So how come? How come only people who know how to solder get the pleasure of running homebrew on the wii and gamecube and all that while normal people like me can only do it on the nds, gb's, and psp?
I think you might be onto something when you mentioned portability.  I know that the PS2 can run backups without a modchip.  However, I don't think "normal people" tend to know about it.  I never would've known that the PS2 can be hacked without a modchip if my boyfriend didn't accidentally find out that one of his coworkers knew how to do it.  The probability of such a thing happening were actually rather low.  However, the NDS is much easily accessible.  People everywhere seem to be pulling their NDS Lites out, and when I show interest, they seem very happy to show off what the NDS can do, including telling me how to hack it just as casual conversation.  This doesn't happen with non-portable machines.  So, for all I know, maybe someone has found a way to hack the Gamecube or the Wii without a modchip as well, but I just haven't met the right people to tell me how to do it.  The portables would seem to allow more and easier collaboration between hackers, and it might increase the probability of hacking if people can just test things whenever and wherever the inspiration strikes them rather than having to wait to go home to try it.

Errr... how do you hack the ps2 without a modchip. One of my friends wants to know... (and I thought no one at my school was into piracy. Hmmm. Well it seems like the reason for that was because of MODCHIPS. But if modchips arn't needed...)

There are swap disc for the PS2 where you don't need a mod chip at all.

or if you have a hard drive, you can install HDloader on a memory card, and you don't need a modchip either.  search "ps2 memory card exploit"
