Any future amps to allow playing XVID on DS?

This might be a stupid question for one that understands all of the processing required for video compression/formats, but I'm just wondering if there's any future amps in the works that will directly support different video formats so we don't have to use the DPG converter app. Is the limitation due to the DS processor speed, memory speed, or memory size?

Thanks -- DG

No one can be bothered to write another video playing app, or something.

You are correct that the DS processor is definitely too slow to play Divx or any similar codecs.

Deedge: Limitation is in all of the above. Xvid is a very complex codec based on the MPEG 4 standard. The current DPG container uses MPEG1 and MPEG 2 video, which are far less complex.

Besides the codec complexity itself, the DS would actually have to do more work to display the images then a normal PC because you'd have to decode the entire frame and then run some sort of filter to resample the image (most videos are 640x480 or better, the DS screen is 256x192) which would further eat CPU cycles.

Thanks for the responses. I figured that it would be something like that but really wasn't sure.  I'll just keep using the converter when I need it.

But what if I overclock the DS by 500%, upgrade the CPU, add video processing chip via a daughter card, increase onboard RAM to 1GB, and add 12" LCD display. Additional battery and heatsinking might be needed.
:D
(Before someone flames me, I AM JUST KIDDING!)

Thanks again -- DG

Wish I could help you, but I lent my magic wand to a friend and he won't give it back. And that fairy dust I ordered from eBay turned out to be a cheap Hong Kong knockoff and didn't work.

Sorry.
