Hi

Do any mac emus for windows run garageband well? We have learned how to use the thingy at school. I think the little piece of software is increadibly cool and fun to use. I want to use the program at home...

But nooooo. I have a windows computer, not a macontosh one. So, does the little piece of software work on any emu's?

what are your computer's specs?  do you have a spare hard drive around?

I can help guide you to a better way: installing mac OSX on your PC.

Hi

I ordered a new hard drive last week. Wow!

How much space will the mac thing take up. I got the new hard drive because I need the space. So... I can't use to much space on my new drive.

Can mac read most standered windows video files? That's what I got the drive for, to store my vids.

oh.. well the whole thing's effectiveness really depends on what type of computer you have.  what cpu and motherboard chipset are you using?

the cleanest simplest way is to devote an entire drive to the OSX.  there are ways of dual-booting, but it gets more complex..

Hi

I'm happy to dovote an entire drive to osx. It sounds cool. But only if osx can read avi files. I got the hard drive so that I could store my avi files on it.

But I don't mind playing the avi files with mac. That's what macontosh is best for anyway right?

I'll post my hardware in a moment

Hi

My cpu is an intel pentium 4 CPU 1.80 GHz

I can't seem to find what my motherboard chipset is. How do I find it?

hmm.. it may not run very fast on your cpu, but it will still be a heck of a lot better than emulation.

not sure what you mean.  For me, Mac is best for video editing, not because it's a better platform, but because my favourite creative software is mac-based.  As far as video playback, mac is not known to be any better than PC.  In fact, you'll find a lot more choices in the PC world than the mac world.  But now that Apple is BSD-based, there are lots of open-source video playback apps that can easily be ported to OSX Darwin.

[edit] forgot your other question: Do you know what brand your motherboard is?  is your PC custom, or is it from a manufacturer like Dell, or something..?

try right-clicking my computer, choosing properties, and then under the "hardware" tab, select device manager.

if you can expand the "system devices" tree, and look for anything that says either "intel, SiS, ALi, NVidia (it won't be that, judging by your cpu), Via," or something like that, that will let you know what chipset you're using..

also, under IDE/ATA controllers it should have some references to your chipset...

there are other ways of discovering your chipset, but these are simple easy to explain methods..[/edit]

to find out what  cpu, mobo & memory you have use cpuid http://www.cpuid.com/
it will tell you what chipset you have

sneef

ROFL.. i use cpuid all the time and forgot to even mention that..

Sneef, I ran OSX tiger on my p4 2.66GHZ (Only SSE2) :-( I've got an ati 9600 pro so had no video driver issues but can you let me know if you have dvd/video playback probs, mine was so slow i gave up - i wanted to use osx for final cut pro, idvd and imovie but after seeing dvd/mpeg2 playback I thought better of it

my dvd/video is perfect.  no probs.  I do lots of final cut pro, and dvd studio pro.

it's what I do at work, and I transfer my files via ext. firewire drive to work at home. no probs at all.. but i'm on core2duo with intel 975x chipset, so its very compatible...  using geforce 7900 with QE/CI enabled via titan drivers...

your dvd/video probs may be ATA related.  if you don't have the correct ATA drivers loaded, it may be running in PIO mode, and hence, very slow rates.

run xbench on the HDD, and tell me what score it gives.

In that case, just I simple yes or no answer. Is there a free video playing program that will play avi files on the macontosh as well as or better then windows media player will on windows? If the answer is no I cannot dovote my new hard drive to macontosh as the reason I got the new hard drive was because I need more space for my videos?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. (I mean, there's quicktime, right) but still asking.

my motherboard chipset is "Intel i8845GL"

So can I run mac??? this sounds increadibly cool. I read that you could do it when you posted in the windows vista thread but I didn't consider doing it untill now...

I don't care if mac runs a bit slow as long as it's not increadibly slow. I still have windows so I can just use that to do things quickly.

simple answer: yes

complex answer:  avi is not really a type of video, but just a "container" file.  there are many types of video files that have the extension "avi".  generally, it is easier to find and implement codecs for windowsxp than for quicktime on mac...

one more thought:  for garageband, your sound card's line-in or mic-in port(s) must be functional.  this can be tricky depending on your chipset.

Check www.osx86project.org for more details.

[edit] i did some searching, and just to let you know, their search function is really weird.. i find it very hard to find what i'm looking for.. but you'll need to search 845G not i8845gl (which is what you typed).  it is actually i845gl, but the family of chipsets that they will refer to is 845G.  it seems OSX86 can be installed on 845G, and your integrated graphics will work too [/edit]

Hi

Okay. Well, first I'm finding the guides on that site very confusing. Could you reccomend one, (and drop a link).

It seems like you need to burn a dvd in order to install. Problem is, I don't have a dvd burner. (Or a reader anymore. I used to have one but now it's busted and unfixable )

One guide also said that it would take up 10gb. I can't give mac that much memory to use. the hard drive I'll be using is only 20gb, and as I said, I need it to store my avi files.
