Random Power Offs - Lite + FlashMe + SC Mini

Hey ho,
has anyone else every experienced their DS randomly turning itself off while playing.
I was playing NSMB for about two last night then plugged the power cable in as battery lightturned red.
After about ten mins it turned itself off. Figured that the battery had just ran out. Left if to charge over night.
This morning played for about 15 mins and the same thing happened, just cut out. Restarted Mario and it turned off as soon as I got into a level. And twice more after that.
I then tried Mario Kart and that seemed fine.
I'm now not sure if its the new SC mini (flashme and the regular SC never did this before) or if its the New SUper Mario Bros rom.
Anyone got any ideas or have the same thing happen?
Cheers

Well i guess the first thing would be asked is if this happens on other games you play or just the new SMB?

I'm running the same setup as you (Lite, SC mini, NSMB) and it hasn't happened to me yet.

A couple questions:  after this incident, do your other games play fine?  no power-offs?  does your battery life seem normal now?

Do you ever get the "not find the SD" message?  Perhaps your miniSD is not getting seated properly.  Try using some folded paper to make the miniSD fit a little tighter in the SD slot.

ImmortalNinja

Nope never got the "not find the SD" message.

Other games seem to work fine, only seems to happen on Mario Bros.
Which is weird because I've been playing it for a week and only have a couple of Star Coins left to get a 100% when this happened.
Maybe the rom on the memory card has been corrupted slightly. I'll delete and copy on again and see if the same thing happens.

Also my friend who was borrowing my old chunky DS and spare mini-supercard also said the DS powered off on him when playing mario kart, although there we're not sure if he accidently hit the power switch or not, or if it was a net work problem.

Or maybe I'm using cheap media (sandisk and AData).....or maybe I've just overused my supercards.....

Ahh well....

Well, if you nearly completed The New Mario Bros. without problems then it's probably not the SD media.  You could backup everything and try re-formatting the miniSD, and also re-patch the game.  Did you do any kind of firmware upgrade lately? Perhaps your SD slot contacts are a little warn.  It can't hurt to try the paper trick.

ImmortalNinja

Man I have no idea whata happening now.
My lite powers is now consistently powering off with NSMB.

I've tried two different MiniSC with two different miniSD and two different copies of NSMB (but with the same save).

Odd thing is it only crashes half way through a level. All the mini games and all the way through the UI its fine......

Guess the next thing to try is: My old SCSD, everything on the chunky DS and start a new game completly.

I have a feeling it might be the save file as I got through most of the game with no problems...

(oh and I also tried the paper trick, with no luck. Didnt think it was that seeing as NSMB was the first thing on the card and I;ve only plugged it in once and nothings moved since then...)

Very strange.....

Might be a stupid question but someone has done it before. Did you put a permanent short to the SL1? It might be shorting the wrong thing and shutting the system off.

ImmortalNinja

Hi,
been real busy so not much time to mess with the DS
I checked the SL1 just to make sure there was no debris left over (used foil covered tooth pick to flash)
All clear.

However the problem is not so random anymore, which could be a good or bad thing I guess....

The problem is related to the Y and B keys.
Most of the games I've been playing have been touch screen based which is why I didnt notice this and why the mini-games and UI work for NSMB.
However the game also cut out when I started playing DBZ recently and the only common thread I could think of were the keys.
As a test I loaded NSMB up and found that the DS would only power off if I used a combination of Y and B.....
I can now quite un(happily) reset most games using the Y-B button combo, havent tried a real cart yet though as they're all at work
I guess it might just be my LIte :( boo hoo
Think I'm going to be weary about playing games while charging now...

Interesting.  It might be a loose connection (ribbon) inside your DSlite.  What happens if you apply pressure near Y and B ?

ImmortalNinja

well,
its definitely the lite thats the problem.
Just tried with the Metroid demo  cart and the same thing happens.
Tried pressing the area around the keys and couldnt reproduce.
Guess I'll reflahs the firmware before taking my baby apart...

Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys.

Has a solution to this been found? I can confirm that it has no relation to flashme or supercard usage as a friend of mine with a non flashed DS who only plays official games reported this exact problem. His email he sent me:

The problem seems to be when the Y and B buttons are held down.  The Lite will just shut off (as if the power button was pushed).  As you can imagine it means that playing mario/Mario kart is impossible as you generally have to hold multiple buttons.

Only just started happening recently.

Before this started happening he told me he was getting a weird waving effect through his top screen (used to happen on the NDS if the sound was turned up to full and a loud sound was played). Not sure if this is related...

Any ideas as what it could be and a way to fix it?

bitblt

I would try to get warranty exchange if possible.  If that isn't an option I would get a tri-wing screwdriver and inspect the inside.  Maybe try re-seating the BIOS and stuff.  Good luck.

ImmortalNinja

well I reflashed it with several versions of flashme just in case the firmware was getting confused and auto powering off for some reason.
Still no luck.
As soon as I get hold of a tri-screwdriver I guess I'll take it apart.
Anyone know where I can get hold of one of these in the UK?
(or maybe I'll just get a shiny new black one...)

Wow, thanks the info about some things about that, I have the same issue!

I firstly didn't know why it's powering off / shutting down, but later I figured it out that it's maybe about the buttons... then, I am checked it, pressed all buttons, with no luck, not turned off when I wanted to shut down... but you helped me alot!! The Y and B buttons are the beasts... but now, when I ressed L + B, it shutted down, too... and next when I pushed / pressed the B button, shutted down, too... ah, uh... it's goed too far, don't it?

Now, what to do to fix it? The warranty still covers, but it's too much complication ... here the warranty isn't as great as in the US... just to send it to Nintendo and get a new one... ahh... any help?  Muchly apprecianted!!!!
