Can R4 beat DS-X speed?

I have a DS-Xtreme, and I am pretty happy with it, because it needs zero updating and patching, and all games run great! Except... recently I got let down because of Castlevania PoR. The game DOES run, I am at +- 800% right now, but sometimes it does freeze because of the sound problems. Seems the read speed on the DS-X is not quite up to par.

So, do you guys believe that if I got myself an R4 with a pretty decent microsd card, I would be able to run CPoR flawlessly?

Also on a side note, does the R4 require regular updates (to kernel, loader, patcher whatever) to be able to run newer games?

THANKS!!!!!!!!

lol, calm down with the caps and faces lol

Anyways. The R4/M3 and SCone would be able to play PoR with a highspeed sandisk microSD card (the Ultra II series) or a Japanese made microSD (Kinston's made in Jp, Toshiba's, and some other brands out there that use Toshiba OEMs).

As for firmware updates to play games; nope, because it can run clean roms, and the R4/M3 uses the biggest saver size to solve the saver issue. The SCone can do the same,  but just not by default, you simply need to change the settings and save it.
y EQ:
-Superkey
-SC SD - 2gb Sandisk Ultra II
-SC Lite Rumble - 1gb Kingston (tw)
-SCone - 1gb Toshiba (jp)
-R4DS - 1gb Sandisk (cn)

Hmm ok, so all these carts are basically the same (game-compatibility-wise), depending solely on the microsd speed... Just one note: You mentioned Sandisk Ultra-II Microsd, but I remember using an Ultra-II SD Card (regular size) with my old Supercard SD, and in some games it wasn't quite enough. Or maybe it was the Supercard SD fault...? Anyway, from your post, a high speed, quality card should suffice right?

I'd better start looking into other features then (interface, extra features etc) to make my decision among R4, M3, EZV and SCOne.

Sorry for the caps, won't happen again. As for the smilies, I like to use them as a kind of signature on all my posts on all forums...

if your intent is to play POR flawlessly, i'd probably point you over to the DS-Linker, N-Card, Express Card, MK5 card... whatever...

According to the reviews, they can run POR and other troublesome games as if they were the original carts...

Hmm... gonna look into all these other names, but I guess it's a little late, because I ordered an EZFlash-V already! Anyway, if I find one of these you mentioned is a better alternative than EZV, I'll just buy one of them and sell the EZV...

Thanks for the replies!

To tell you the truth, PoR is not my strongest reason to concern. I DO own the retail PoR, but since this is the one game giving problems to flashcarts, I got worried about future titles... and if a card can play PoR it will probably play more future titles than the other carts...

This is the exact same reason I got a Japanese Kingston for my R4. So you should probably get one for your EZV.

But, I do love my DS-Linker more than any of my flash carts. Like someone else mentioned, it runs every game at full speed. Never has a problem.
