As some of you may already know Sony has recently released a new PSP 3.40 firmware simultaneously with a new PS3 firmware 2.70. These firmware updates provide enhanced PSP/PS3 connectivity including the ability to save PS3 game data to PSP memory, and the ability to play PS1 game downloads from the Playstation Network on both PSP and PS3. I just hope Popstation will work with both systems eventually.

Well DarkAleX didn't waste time and has already released custom firmware 3.40 OE-A. DarkAleX notes the following improvements from 3.30 OE-A to 3.40 OE-A:

- Updated from 3.30 firmware to 3.40
- Security patch: Fixed a bug that has been in all 3.XX OE, that caused random data to be written to a location in lcdc.prx or (in worst case) emc_sm.prx ram space.
- Autboot that is missing since 3.03 OE-C has been reimplemented.
- Improvements in the flasher. It will now generate also the flash1 directories, and it will check that the dxar is the correct for this update, so no more bricks by accidentally using other DATA.DXAR.

Jeez. Lately, the way I've been learning about new Sony firmware updates is reading the news of an OE version. :)

Finally got an unpatched copy of GTA and got my PSP all up to par - 1.50

Now I want to instal this newest firmware by Dark Alex. Is there a tutorial somewhere that shows how to do it? I found a few places that have the d/l link for it but nothing telling how to use it.

EDIT:

There is a readme in the file I d/l that says:

3.40 Open Edition REvision A

Installation instructions:

- Copy oeupdmaker and oeupdmaker% to /PSP/GAME if you are in 1.50, or to /PSP/GAME150 if you
are in any SE/OE version. Get the 1.50 and 3.40 Sony updaters (of any region, because all are
currently the same), and copy them in the oeupdmaker directory with the names 150.PBP and 340.PBP.

Execute the program, and it will generate the DATA.DXAR file. The checksums (althoug the flasher
will check for them for you):

 CRC32: CDA4638D
 MD5:   9754F2CC0CBE2D8FE0DD009C90FDCD9F
 SHA1:  6F76BB67B31EFF6FECB72D9D4AF443C793E1E521

- Copy 340oeflasher and 340oeflasher% to /PSP/GAME if you are in 1.50, or to /PSP/GAME150 if you
are in any SE/OE version. Move the DATA.DXAR to 340oeflasher directory.

You need 75% battery, although you can skip this if you pressed L+triangle while loading the program.

The part I put in bold up there - where do I get those? Thanks for answering my questions as I am new to this = ]

Right on bud, thanks for the links.

I used a tut here http://www.psp-downgrades.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1556
and upgraded to 3.03 OE-C

Now I assume I just do the same thing but with these updated files? And .. is it fine to go right to 3.40 OE-A or do I need to upgrade to the previous versions of the firmware first?

You can skip versions if you like but you're better off following instructions for the version you're installing because they're not always the same.

That was fast, I just updated my firmware from 3.10OE-A to 3.30OE-A like two days ago.

Anyone know if it's possible to have OE FW as one your soft-firmwares in DevHook? I know it's possible to run devhook on OE, but is it possible to run OE on Devhook? I want to try OE so I can use popstation but I'd ratehr stick with my 1.5 hard firmware

No, it is not possible. OE needs to be directly written to the flash. You can always downgrade back to 1.5 if you want to, but trust me, you won't want to :). The days of "sticking to 1.5" are in the past now.

Well what features does it have apart from being "3.x with the ability to run homebrew" and popstation ?

Well besides being able to run homebrew, PS1, and PSP ISOs directly from XMB without devhook, you can disable the PSP startup logo screen, hide files with broken icons, adjust CPU clock speed up to 333Mhz, add custom plug-ins to customize XMB, and more. Plus the firmware will be current enough to connect to your PS3 if you have one.

ISOs appear as games on your memory card list as if they were Sony game demos or homebrew. You click them and they run. No need to run Devhook, no need to set your firmware version, etc. OE is also updated very often, where Devhook doesn't seem to be as much.

I installed it for Popstation support but now that I'm using it I think it would still be worth it even if it wasn't for Popstation.

Isn't there a way to adjust the screen brightness, if so how, lol? Also is there a usbhost plugin for this version?

I think if you use OE it allows you to set the brightness(using the regular button) to the fourth battery-killing brightness that is usually only available if you're plugged in.

And there is usually a USB prx but it unfortunately seems to break with each version of OE and I don't know what the status of it is now.
