Cory, I think you can now say that it is confirmed that it works perfectly with the SC CF with v1.54 firmware :) I have two SC CF's, so I said "what the hell" and patched it tonight.

This is really great. When I think about it, I really am in DS mode so much more than GBA mode, and this is just so convenient. Is this now the first device to actually boot directly into DS mode without any keypresses? I am assuming the M3 and others need ABXY.

Thanks again for your magnificent work. If ever in NJ, I will buy you a few drinks pal! :)

some SC team member just said on our local NDS bbs"this function will be included in 1.6"
and...the next version will be out around Chinese Spring Festival(Jan 28/29)

Bah, NDSbbs always grabs my builds and collects DS Yuan's for them (I cant even post there even with an account). Not to mention that since ETool and a link to my site had gotten posted to their forum I have been getting chinese ????1??? spam in my email.

M3 goes straight into DS mode with flashme too ;)  (honestly, it was what I figured they meant when they said they were making supercard flashme compatible a couple versions ago...)

But think on this: If I can dump the firmware and make a simple modification to it, and actually the code to do so is not that complex:
:( 1 - how safe is your device, really... I mean, its 6 hex commands to a specific address to erase the firmware.
:) 2 - whats stopping someone who knows asm from reversing the kernel and adding whatever they want to it... not much if you ask me. Could proabably even modify the .scu check to load a different kernel or something else entirely.

Im glad its working for you all, to me its a "godsend" to have DF's rescue tool, I am wondering if it wouldnt have been able to fix some of those SC's that die with each new update...

I'd be really interested in that, since I have one SC CF down.
I bought another one. But it would be great having a way to recover it.

1) That's why I haven't posted the decrypted 1.54 firmware, in just in case of... ;)

Thanks for the patch, I fiured out how to do it but I was too lazy to make it compile and release it :D

hmm well if thats possible is it possible then when you load a gba rom in nds mode that the bottom screen go's out ? couse that would be nice to do then you couse boot nds and gba with no poblem becouse the bottom screen is out so looks like your back in gba mode.

Works great on my DS. But somehow I have the feeling that my DS is
not standard anymore

I've seen post here and there about security of cards, and frankly I think its all a load of rubbish.

Could malicious code brick my NDS or SC, maybe even my SD card?  Hell yea it could.  But the same can be said of just about ANY piece of hardware you allow software write access too.

All it means, is that just like with all other software on the planet, when you get it, you need to be careful that it is not malicious code.

The only thing that can help is the same thing that helps the other markets, awareness and tools to assist in control of access to critical write ares(like a password required to perform a write on the SC firmware or NDS firmware could be nice).  And tools to help in recovery in the case that you do install something like a bricker.

cory1492

wow, its like you saw the first point and missed the second one I gave for consideration...

consider a POV of the pro and con I presented: together
"with great wisdom comes great responsibility"
and
"preaching to the choir" :
I said it before on gbadev, the bricker that got released is really just going to be a test of our devices ability to be recovered and force the recovery tools to be needed (a good thing in the end, if you ask me) - fortunately, for some at least, DF who made the origional trojan took it upon hisself to make the recover tools.

as far as I am able to tell, there is no easy way to directly determine whether a program that has the code to write the erase command is malicious or not. It has to be erased before any rewrite as far as I know (which is also why I suspect DF's tool on his site could potentially recover those dead devices that crashed out during an update).

I'm just saying, I don't see the big difference between an NDS being brickable via malicious software, and a PC being brickable in the same way.

A majority of internet users wouldnt have a clue if they downloaded a piece of software that could wipe their HDD or even skrew their bios..  Forget about easy way of checking it for malicious code, most users wouldnt know how to check it for version number, or anything to that matter.  People download and install willy nilly all the time, and it borks their computers and they call me and I fix it.

I mean, I agree its important to take steps to prevent this stuff, within reaosn, but I just don't see it as something to make any worry about, not anymore than the norm anyway.

I guess I'm saying, I don't see the ease of access to the bios to be security issue, more so a fact of life one must take into consideration.  Like how a car is a very dangerous thing, but they put them in the hands of morons anyway, despite the fact that they could certainly be used to cause much harm, you just kinda have to accept it, cause it's better that people have the freedom to drive, than be protected by illegalizing stuff.
