When you start the rom with a game save it doesn't go straight into the game it goes to a menu.  You could just press start right bfore the game starts but it is a little tricky.

Okay when you start the game with this .sav file press the start button (3 times I think) to skip the first three screens.  Then the menu screen will come up.  Quickly press down and select multiplayer using the A button.  Choose host game or join game, and then press the B button to go back to the menu.  The reason you have to do that is to avoid the game from freezing.  If by chance it does freeze just restart the game and try again, that has worked for me.
