My girlfriend went to Hong Kong for her holiday and I asked her to get me a slot 1 card, I recommended she visit the Golden Computer Shopping Centre in Sham Shui Po. She asked a number of shops if they had any, most said no and only have slot 2 cards. Ok, at this point I'm thinking it's possible they just don't stock it yet.

Then, she informs me (quite prudently) she was explicitly told by several clerks that "nobody uses slot 1 cards anymore!", implying slot 2 is the new thing. She even showed them a picture of a supercard/m3/r4/etc I thrusted upon her.

So what's the deal?

I did think they must have gotten confused with a passkey or something, but she had pictures dammit! also, some of those shops only sell video games related stuff, they must be kept well informed.

you must understand that in that part of the world (i am from singapore originally, and have travelled in hong kong, malaysia, and other neighboring regions) shopkeepers will make things up to sell you what they want to sell you.  If they don't have something in stock, they may say "that thing is lousy, nobody wants it" rather than have you go to another shop and buy it.. they'd rather you buy a different item from them...

There are many reasons they make things up, but the bottom line is that they just want your dollar.  they aren't necessarily concerned about returning customers.. they just want that sale right here, right now.

we're originally from hong kong and i can understand the whole ruthlessness thing when it comes to getting a sale. but i think things have changed nowadays and that opinion is more stereotype. in terms of their sales strategy, i've found that shops are more resistant to haggling and will probably have higher markup rather than lying to coax you into buying a more expensive item.

it's not a stereotype.  it is still normal practice.. i'm talking about 3 months ago.  :)

LOL I am from Hong Kong, and I have to admit that most shopkeepers are like that. It's not because they want to scam you or anything. It's because 90% of the time the shop keeper don't even know what the hell they are selling! I actually know a shopkeeper that sells these kinda stuff pretty well, and apparently I know more about pirating games than he does.

Also the golden computer shopping center isn't that great for getting pirating console stuff. I usually go to Wan chai 188. I am currently in the states so I am not sure if they have the slot-1's yet, but I am pretty sure they do.

LOL! I also live in Hong Kong and i always go to Golden Computer Centre. The last time i went, they were selling R4 and M3 but no SCDS 1. But they seem to promote the slot 2's more for some reason, maybe to get rid of the old stuff ASAP. It is true that they arent that nice and wants you to buy their stuff right away and that they do not know alot about what they are selling. But i think it is always the best place to go when you want to buy games and flashcarts.
