Why does everyone like the dslink.

Hi

Maybe this is false, but it seems like the dslink is more popular than the scds(one). Is it my imagination?

What's so great about the dslink. It seems a bit out-dated by the newer cards.

dslink has the best download play compatibility as far as i know.

scdsone has bad build quality

It is built quality great, has very good compatibility, a simple but effective GUI...to name some. I love the card myself, as I do my R4.

Nintendo Wii - cIOS38 Revision 12 (and more)

Added to all that, it was the first slot 1 card, so when the hype was up, everyone got one.  I was so tempted to buy one, but was strapped for cash.  Had to turn to the raffle.  :)

DSLink was available months before other slot1 cards surfaced, was the first slot1 solution that didn't stick out, was fairly inexpensive at the time, was the first to support DS games that slot2 cards couldn't run, was one of the first to support Opera, has a good looking interface and is relatively fast, has regular software updates and is well made. DSLink also supports microSD and FAT32 and is compatible with DLDI for running homebrew. The only downside with this device is that it only works with a flashed DS.  (All of my DS's are flashed BTW)

EDIT:
Oh yeah, DSLink doesn't support clean ROMs. You will need to patch ROMs before you can use them. Even with SCDS and DS-X I still need to trim ROM's . . . so clean ROM support isn't that big of a deal IMHO.

Hi

WOW bitbit. That's a lot more reasons I was expecting everyone combined to give me, let alone one person.

I agree, I don't care about clean rom support. Even with my scdsone, I always use supermode. I don't have to use supermode. But I use it anyway. I don't see how patching roms is harder than copying roms.

All you have to do to patch roms is open a program and click three times (add, select the rom you want to patch, and out.)

when copying roms, it's the same. You open the folder that contains the rom you want to and click two times (rightclick on the rom, click copy) open the removable disk and click another two times (rightclick paste.)

So, patching roms is easier. (although abviously, depending on many things, you may have to click more times than mentioned in both cercomstances)

Back on topic, okay, I think I get why people like the dslink now (even if it doesn't have a touch screen interface. I know it's silly, but that's the only reason I got the dsone rather than the link. I'm glad of my choice now for other reasons, but isn't that silly what I thought origanally  )

Right click -> Send to (SD adapter drive letter)

That's a lot faster then having to patch ^_^. Even if I don't use Send to (if I want to put something in a specific directory) I drag and drop it on. Right clicking and going to copy and then finding the directory and clicking paste is waaaay too much effort.

I'm doing a review of Slot 1 cards - the DS-Link will be one of them.  Most of the reasons mentioned will be listed as well.

It's still a viable solution for many reasons.

That's fine if you want to quickly test a new ROM or something. Personally I can't stand to waste space on my SD media so I need to trim ROMs. It doesn't matter if I use my SCDS, DSLink or DS-X, I still have to process ROMs before I use them. If I'm going to go through the trouble of processing ROMs, I might as well use features of the patching software like "in game reset".

Yeah, as a moderator here I try to read most of the posts and I did read that thread. Batch files and scripts are great. Excellent work guys.

My argument is a processing step is still required, albeit yours is a simple one. The batch idea is great if you just purchased a brand new slot1 card and want to quickly process your entire ROM backup collection. After everything is done processing life is grand. Now what? You wait for the next killer release. When you get your hands on this new release you have a few options; you can trim the ROM manually, you can use one of the patcher programs, or you can run a batch script. Regardless there is still some processing to be done. For me it's worth the extra few seconds to use the patcher software to perform trim function as well as have the option to use "in game reset" etc. Supercard and DSLink both support "in game reset" and is a worthwhile feature to me.

not to hijack the thread.... but

if I select more than 1 rom, it'll only trim a few.

plus, when i do trim the roms, trim.exe goes fullscreen, which I find quite odd.

just thought i'd point that out... is anyone else running into those problems?

The nice thing about the R4 is that you don't need to process the ROMs in order to have IGR, it's built into the card.  Now that it is, I find myself actually using it, because if a game fails to work with it on (like Nacho Libre does), all I have to do is do the IGR, and turn it off, restart the game - I'm not burdened by repatching, recopying, etc.

That being said, I totally agree with your assessment, and my review says something to that fact with regards to the DS-Link and it's incredibly clean patcher software....

Of all the slot 1 solutions I've tested, the DS-Link is BY FAR the easiest to use, thanks to a simple, yet effective patcher program.  It fully supports ZIPped roms, can do batches of roms at one time, even trims them.  As a bonus, it will even copy them over to your microSD card for you!  It really doesn't get much easier to use than this .....  The interface will even allow you to attempt to patch the roms to allow for a "soft reset" where a certain button combination resets the card back to the menu.  It's hit and miss, but worth noting.

I would have done the Supercard DS but didn't have one to review.  These were all I had. :)
