i downloaded the firmware file and extracted it. am i suppose to replace some files? or install it somehow? thanks

this is how you do it,

download the firmware with the patcher in the download section,

put the .bin file into your supercard SD, miniSD, microSD

go into GBA mode (... well doesnt really matter) and select the .bin file,

it should update - do not turn off the ds... haha...

I take the last bit as serious or a joke? cause i still cant work diddy kong racing...

He meant don't turn the DS off while it's updating. To use Diddy Kong you need to disable the 'Restart' option in the patcher

all i see is the game boy word on the top screen, when do i know its finish updating?

It should send you through a series of prompts asking you to press buttons, then there will be a progress button and after the update closes and you get to the menu just reset the DS
