Which should I get? I am only buy it because I wanted no slow down in games and the ability to play Castlevania: POR. I know you can change the R4DS into a M3 Simple and visa versa but I don't want to open it. The M3 card is only about 1 pound more then the R4DS but are they literally the same thing?

I think it depends on the memory card too.

I've read the r4 and m3 have the same hardware, but the new batch makes it harder for you to change from one to an other.

Both R4 DS and M3 Simply are the same thing hardware wise. Software wise the updates have had the same features so far. Both cards don't have slowdown with regular MicroSD cards, but to avoid PoR crashes get a fast MicroSD like the popular Japanese 1GB Kingston ones. I've had no problems with my Sandisk Ultra II either, but those cost a fortune. Thanks to a certain f1fthe1ement I was led to believe that those are the best one could get back in November.. :/

I decided to go with an R4 myself. I didn't want to wait for SCDS's to be in stock and I didn't like how it insisted on having a fast SD.  After looking around and asking a few questions myself, I determined that the R4 is the safer bet. I'll be getting mine this week.

M3 may slack off on support for the M3 when their "Real" series comes out. I figure R4 will end up having better support.  Plus, R4 has more goodies out-of-the-box.

Go with an R4.
Current setup:
Onyx DSlite/R4DS/SCminiSD
2gig Transcend card for the SCminiSD
2gig Kingston for the R4DS
4 gigglingbytes of games/apps! WOOT!

R4 = M3

R4 (as far as anyone can tell) are the actual creators of the hardware and they seem to get their software updates out faster... but only by a day or so.

So I should get a R4 DS? I mean from what I have gathered they are the same thing except one is blue and one is black.

BTW I am getting the Sandisk Ultra II 1GB from MobyMemory for £16 (inc postage) which is a bargin.

R4 is white.....well, mine is lol
64 PORTS 4EVER!!!!!

I got the R4 because its white and it matches my white DS lite. The M3 simply has a regular black case.

Sonic666

Well I ordered a M3 Simple just because they are literally the same thing but different colours and I like the sound of M3. I also bought a Sandisk Ultra II 1GB for only £16! My stuff is going to come on Wednesday. I hope Castlevania works on it.

I wasn't worried about what color the cart is.....the R4 is white and I have a black DSlite. Doesn't bother me in the least.  Besides, I could just use a sharpie on the edge of the cart if I was worried about it.

I just wanted a slot 1 flashcart so I could get the DS games out of my SCminiSD and put  all the vids and emu's back in it, not to mention being able to use the Opera Browser.

And the AR I was using as a Passme?  Stuffed in a drawer somewhere, never to be used again.  I don't do cheating in my games.  A Passme is all I bought the AR for anyway.  The price I paid for it worked out to about the same money as ordering a Superkey with shipping, so I don't feel ripped-off or anything for having bought it.

I also went with the R4. Over at BC, people just rave, and go on and on about this card. So I thought, what the heck, it must be great.

I'm also going to pick of a Sandisk Ultra II. I'm just waiting to find a great deal, and hope that site accepts money orders. The R4 is coming with just a regular Sandisk MicroSD now. So hopefully PoR runs well on it. If not, then I'll just continue you to play it on my G6. It runs it flawlessly.
Setup:
White Lite
Slot 1: CycloDSx2GB Kingston Japan, Supercard DSOne+1GB Nokia(J), 16G G6 DS Real, 16G DS-Linker, R4x1GB Kingston(J),
Slot 2: G6 Lite
PSP: 3.40 OE-A

Personally i have an M3 Simply now, and what can i say, it's great. Saves all converted nicely, although one at a time sucked and soft reset works without patching :) only dislike is when i have a slot 2 card in, it boots to it first, so i have to hit select.

I have this card also. I use DS rom tool which converts and trims and adds saves on multiple games at once. you cannot dislike a card because it boots to Slot 2 first when this is caused by flashme and not the m3.

Yea, i know it's flashme, Im just saying i dislike how it does that :P and where can i find this DS room tool?

On GBAdev, the developer named Lick has been working on a way to modify FlashMe to go directly to slot-1 instead of slot-2.  He has apparently been successful.  The latest release is at http://lickr.org/files/nds/flashme/DSHooterDONT.nds
Instructions:
QuoteIt works! I successfully patched FlashMe, now it boots to the original firmware even when a homebrew slot-2 device is inserted. Try without shorting SL1 first, if it says "Failed" then short.

1) Download and run unpassme_flashme. Read on-screen text.
2) Open battery-case, short SL1. (Beware of the evil-screw!!!)
3) Press START.
4) The write-procedure will only run ONCE, so make sure that the MOMENT you press START, SL1 is connected.

After patching, you can still hold ABXY to boot to Slot-2.

Note that these instructions are for an older release.  When he released the one I just linked to, he mentioned that you can now retry, so step 4 is not necessary, and obviously the filename is different now than in step 1.
Quotehttp://lickr.org/files/nds/flashme/DSHooterDONT.nds (disables Passing)
http://lickr.org/files/nds/flashme/DSBooterPASS.nds (enables Passing)

There you go. Added retries (press START to try again and again and again) and DSBoote.r replacement.
Tested, works fine!
