what type of file does the video have to be in order for it to work on the R4?

Note:  I don't own an R4 so this is all from what I've read:

Most likely DPG format, since the media playing capabilities of the R4 are based on Moonshell 1.6x.  Grab a copy of Moonshell 1.61 and use the included DPG Tools program to convert your files.  Alternatively, you can install 1.71 on your card, launching it from the R4 menu, and using that to browse to your video files and play them, in which case you can use the DPG Tools program included in the 1.71 download.  You just can't use the converter from 1.71 with the built-in R4 media player.

well.. basically R4 just boots up moonshell... you can just rename the 1.71 version of moonshell to match the one included and it'll boot all the same...
