Ok, this addresses the problem of a broken power switch on the DS Lite.

Symptom: You cannot turn on your DS and the power switch slider is loose (i.e. it's no longer "springy").

Cause: The actual switch is soldered onto the main circuit board. A piece of plastic sticks out of this switch and is pushed up and down by the slider. If you experience the above symptoms, 9 times out of 10, the piece of plastic has broken off and the actual switch cannot be pushed up to turn on the device.

The only way you can confirm this is by taking apart the DS, then using a screwdriver to push the switch. (remember to hold the battery in place)

Solution:
  • Buy another DS - always the easiest option :)
  • Buy another power switch - this requires soldering/desoldering and people have broken contact pads on the PCB doing this. (myself included)
  • Bodge it - always my favourite option! (see below)

You're looking at reforming the notch that has broken off. What you basically need to do is glue a pin on there. Here's how:

  • Open up your DS
  • Find a paper clip (or similar) and unfold it
  • Heat the end of the paper clip using a lighter and a set of pliers.
  • Shove the hot end in to the lower position of the switch. This creates a hole for the pin. Wait for pin and melted plastic to cool down, then remove.
  • Cut the end off the paper clip, make sure the part sticking out of the switch is long enough to make contact with the slider.
  • Glue the pin in to the hole. Apply only enough glue to keep the pin in place. The purpose of the glue is to keep the pin from falling out, the depth of the hole provides leverage. Too much glue will fuse the whole mechanism together, rendering it useless.
Hope that was helpful :)
