DVD Movie Playback Possible On Moded Wii

Wiivision (the admin of Wiivision.org) has been able to write a program that will play DVD movies on a moded Wii. It aparently works on a "swap" type method where you burn the program onto a DVD and then eject that disc and insert your movie when told to do so by the program. The program is working but he has not released it just yet.

QuoteMy latest project is a new homebrew app that specificly plays DVDs. It's still bound to the GC-Linux (because we still can't load Wii homebrew), but has greatly been improved in playback quality and region support.
This new app is derived from the "proof of concept" that is MFE, but is all fresh code and loads media without the need of a FileSystem mount emmbedded on each media (eg. the DVD Drive FS mount that has to be included on all media MFE loads).

I'm still in development phase, but have tested a couple canidates with good results.

Support currently includes:
- 4.7G DVD Media (-r, +r, +rw, and of course "originals")
- Region Free
- Multi-Language Subtitle Support

The only real downside to this is that you have to load the DVD containing the app, then swap the DVD you want to watch when asked. It's going to stay that way untill we get true Wii homebrew support (and getting there is way beyond me)

Hi

Can I just quickly ask why we don't have Wii homebrew yet. We have modchips, so with modchips we should be able to do homebrew with little more than a snap of our fingers right? (exaggeration of course. I know how much work programming is. Just making a point.)

My question would be from a technical point of view as ever.... HOW `CHOPPY` will/would the playback be of a RETAIL or RETAIL quality dvd be with a 729MHz processor and 88mb of internal ram (yes its got a dedicated graphics processor but its not geared to real video playback)  :o   although maby MPEG II or even MP4/XVID video format ....may playback good but this is the main reason that nintendo bigwigs intend to release an addon dvd/extra hardware drive/device towards the back end of the year/early 2008 to play dvds using Sonic Solutions CinePlayer CD DVD navigator :)

anyways most of us already have some kind of dvd player either in our pc systems or in the entertainment system around the TV already or even other consoles with dvd players in them ... why would anyone want anymore !?

Could understand the need to have a multimedia format player such as XVID or MPEG/MP4 etc but DVD players are commonplace in most homes today  :)

The existing modchips are drive mod chips only.  All they do is trick the Wii drive into thinking an original game has been inserted.  That's all.  Some other hardware (or hopefully just software) is needed to trick the Wii itself into running other (i.e. homebrew) code.
