WPA - WEP?

How do you make a wireless router's security settings from WPA to WEP.  In case you want to know, I want to go on WiFi.

liquidnitrogen

usually, you consult with your router's manual

then you go to the settings... then change the protection from WPA to WEP

the address for these things - your router is usually 192.168.0.1

the address of my router is strange -.- 192.168.1.254

anyways, go to RUN, then type in

cmd

and then it should be a black window, type in ipconfig or ipconf i forgot... and it'll give you the data that you need

Shinster

if your router is a linksys its usually 192.168.1.1
Then  the default user / pass is admin : admin
Go to wireless settings and change it.
DS Lite Onyx Black
Supercard Lite
Nintendo Wii (US)
PSP (Metal Gear PO Limited Edition)

The brand name isn't always a good indicator of default settings.  For instance, I've heard of Linksys users who have had 192.168.0.* and I know that my personal default login on my Linksys is (blank)/admin, not admin/admin.

However, they are correct in that you need to find out how to access your router's settings and change it to WEP from there.

This is what the Wireless Router Properties window looks like after I tried to do everything right (I probably screwed up somewhere.  I always do   )

When I click OK, the connection to the internet is always lost and when I try to connect back, the security settings are back to WPA.  Any ideas why?

The manual has nothing, BTW.

Try doing what shinster said, attempting to type "192.168.1.1" into your browser, and if that fails, try 192.168.0.1

Or just run "ipconfig -all" in a command prompt and look for the "gateway" field, which should be the IP address of your router.

Vapourstreak

uh... how do u change it though without the internet disconnecting though?

dantheman

I have no idea what you're talking about.  Could you be more descriptive?

Vapourstreak

Everytime I try to change it and press "ok", the internet disconnects and doesn't work.  Then I try to connect it again, and the router is set to WPA again.

dantheman

Again, don't use that Properties screen that you posted a screenshot of before.  Find a way into your router's actual settings page, which is most likely accessed by typing 192.168.1.1 (or a variant of such) into your web browser.  My guess is that that Properties screen is just the way your computer attempts to connect to the network, so telling it to connect via WEP when the router is still coded to use WPA won't do anything.

Vapourstreak

It still gets disconnected tho.  I dunno y

Can you tell me what to do here?

dantheman

Well, it's supposed to disconnect for a minute as it applies your new settings, so don't worry about that.  Happens to me too every time I change a setting in my router config page.

The main issue I see there is that while you've set WEP on, for some reason it's not giving you any keys to use.  I'm not entirely sure why that is.  For me, it asks for a secret codeword to use, and it creates the keys based off of that.  =/  I don't know why yours doesn't have that option.  Perhaps try the "advanced" tab or something?

Vapourstreak

Advanced settings don't work.  I set sumthing different, and it worked for 5 secs b4 killing itself again.  any ideas why?

Vapourstreak

WTF?!?!?!?! Somthing happene....  I fixed the internet.  Now only one of my computer can connect to the interenet.  When I try to disconnect then connect, it just keeps saying disconnect, disconnect and disconnect again.  It never says "connect".  Any ideas why?

Altor

The problem is, as soon as you enable WEP/WPA encryption, your internet communications are shut off because your computers are not attempting to talk using encryption.  Set up the encryption using a wired link, it'll be a lot easier.

Or, as soon as you enable encryption, go into your internet settings (I can give you a detailed process if you need it) and set up encryption from the computer end as well.
