Got a few questions before I buy one:

1) Does the SHOCK! Cases come with an extra GBA Dust Cover?

2) Does the SHOCK! Cases come with a tri-wing screwdriver?

3) Does the SHOCK! Cases come with matching buttons?

4) Is there any problems I should know about before buying it?

5) Is there any reviews about the SHOCK! Cases?

6) Are the SHOCK! Cases sold in any stores?

It is not trivial to replace a DS shell.

RealHotStuff has them.

Thanks.  I read the review.  Did they fix the hinges?

Also, I have to buy a Tri-Wing screwdriver, right?

mudlouse1

1) yes, but only the part which shows once inserted.

2) no, iirc nds-central (manufacturers) sells them along with the shells

3) yes and no. all the shells come with the transparent buttons, the clear blue come with clear blue buttons.

4) yes. mainly quality issues (hinge crack, screw holes not being formed, flashing not removed, etc)

5) the one bitblt mentioned and one more here: http://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=569.0

6) www.coolmods.co.uk had them a while back, not sure about now.

Vapourstreak

Thanks.

For the GBA Dust Cover thing, is it easy to take off?  If not, is there anywhere else I can buy ONLY that cover? (So I can switch between my SC Lite, M3 Lite, G6 Lite, EZ-Flash IV and EZ-Flash V 3-in1)
Also, is the quality issues a big problem?

mudlouse1

the cover slot is actually made up of two pieces of plastic and pcb, the shock only comes with one piece of plastic. it's quite easy to assemble it, only two screws. regarding the switching, i don't think you'd be able to make it fit a slot2 card since the screws and struts are in different places.

in my opinion, the original shell is 10x better looking but the shock is usable if the hinge doesn't crack.

Vapourstreak

So is there any way I can paint the Slot 2 card or something?

ihopeyoudie2

No you cannot paint it to match. Dye it maybe with ritedye, I've seen action figure customizers use that stuff on transformer figs so the joints wont chip.

I had a clear shell when they first came out, just sold it to someone on this site recently and I'd like to say that replacing a shell is no easy task. infact, its a real pain and you could very likely even BRICK your ds. is a cool looking ds really worth that risk? Oh, and the hinges break just like normal ds hinges. Mine did, I've seen plenty that have. Just like Nintendo, they're willing to replace the broken parts but unlike Nintendo you'll have to fix it yourself... and the part that breaks takes HOURS replace...and you'll be risking bricking again.

Does it look cool when done? Hell yeah, but the orginal ds lite case is pretty cool too.

Vapourstreak

Well, the only reason I want to get a SHOCK! Case is because my original Polar White Nintendo DS Lite casing is cracked.  Any other ways to solve this problem?

ihopeyoudie2

Tell Nintendo you took really good care of it and you want them to fix the hinge free of charge. They'll probably so no and ask you to pay, just call back later till they say yes. They should pay for your shipping processes and send you a new DS. I did that to my cracked ds because SHOCK cases weren't going to be out for another month and I'm glad I did that because that small move helped maintain the DS's value.

Just search the forums for "Cracked Hinge." The Cracked Hinge, repairing it yourself, Nintendo's repair policy, and SHOCK cases are all related subject matter.

I just sent my Lite in today, with a cracked hinge. Actually, the top screen was about to fall off because of it. It was cracked since about two weeks after launch last year.

Just fill out a repair form on their site, and they'll send you a UPS shipping label.
Setup:
White Lite
Slot 1: CycloDSx2GB Kingston Japan, Supercard DSOne+1GB Nokia(J), 16G G6 DS Real, 16G DS-Linker, R4x1GB Kingston(J),
Slot 2: G6 Lite
PSP: 3.40 OE-A

I've replaced two DS Lite because of cracked hinges.  Nintendo replaced them both at no charge. Call the number on the back of your DS Lite.  They might try to talk you out of free service (it's a business) so don't except no for an answer.  Tell them you take good care of your DS Lite.

Altor

I've had 3 Lites, no hinge problems, but then again I don't use it every day, just when I'm waiting for stuff.  Reason I've had 3 is because my first one, the A button stopped working consistently from too many hours of over-enthusiastic tetrisDSing.  So they express sent me one, I sent them my original one back in the same package.  This one had a couple dead pixels.  I called back and said it REALLY bothered me and this was worse than my first one, at least it didn't give me a headache to look at.  Voila, 2 days later, another replacment.  This one has only 1 dead pixel.  Rinse and repeat.  Finally I've got a good one.  It took about 2 weeks of doing, but I still call that spectacular service considering what garbage other companies put you through on a regular basis.

That service is the reason I've bought about 12 Wii games even though I've not even opened half of them.  Companies like Nintendo that don't piss and moan when you have a legitimate problem ought to be successful.  It's not like it's free for them to be sending these things all over the place, doing repairs, remanufacturing, etc, etc, having REAL FREAKING HUMANS ON THE PHONE NOT SOME GAY VOICE RECOGNITION THAT NEVER WORKS LIKE MY STUPID ISP WHO I'M GOING TO DROP LIKE AN ANCHOR AT THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY *ahem*...

Yeah I've never actually eh, er.. well let's say my DS-related dealings haven't been quite so honest.  But I've made up for it with Wii and Gamecube stuff.  I must have about 50 games combined, that's 50 x $60 a game with tax.  And this was before I even had a job, so you can imagine the things I had to do in order to come up with that money!  lol

I wonder how much of this is Regginator's doing?

Vapourstreak

Uh.. I called and they kept saying I needed to pay $95.00 and gave me a discount for $75.45.  I told them I took care of it, but they said i still needed to pay.  Can someone give me specific intructions on how to get them to replace it for free?

The Nintendo DS Lite in still under warranty, BTW

bitblt

You must be saying something wrong? Call back and try again with a different agent using a confident voice. Don't tell them you want it replaced, tell them your DS Lite is still under warranty and you want it repaired for free. They will replace it anyway. How old are you? If you have a young voice then ask your Dad to make the call. Tell them you read on the internet that Nintendo has admitted to having a problem with cracked hinges is covering repair. It's true.
