i downloaded high quality mp3's onto my r4 and when i play the mp3's with moonshell, it sounds like a fuzzy radio station, even with headphones. is it just mine or do all moonshells have horrible audio (at least when listening to mp3s)

Codec, quality, etc...?

Try joint stereo rather than regular stereo.  I've read that the results are better... personally I would rather buy a dedicated MP3 player.  That way you get an equalizer, etc...

kentdsfreak

wow im so dumb. i just realized the quality was horrible when you increase the volume of the r4 with the X button...

Well yeah, Moonshell's amplification is software amplification, so it's going to distort things.  A hardware amplifier is needed to make it louder without distortion.  Just keep it at 100% and it should sound fine unless you're listening to a quiet part with total silence around you, at which point you'll hear some slight background noise.

This is where headphones with an inline volume control come in real handy.

But isn't the max for those volume sliders 100% anyway?  Without external power, I don't see how the headphones themselves could amplify it beyond what the DS is already putting out.

My setup is to leave Moonshell at 100%, plug in my headphones, and use the DS's audio control.  If I need it amplified, I use my portable headphone splitter/amplifier that I got for about $20.

And note that the normal DS speakers sound way better than the DS Lite speakers.

You'd need amplifying headphones, I have a non amplifying which I use when I want the ds sound low without the horrid distortion it puts out at the lowest volume level ! (Not Moonshell but the DS itself).

I didn't know the Phat had better sound than the lite, the phat speakers really pump mario kart out well at full volume !

I've noticed that. I (I own a DSphat) have always been AMAZED with moonshell's audio quality. Then I showed it to  a friend on his DSlite, and I think "What happend to the quality?"

Why is it like that?

you dont know how much that pissed me off 2. i was expecting beautiful sound quality just like a use to enjoy in my phat ds, what a disappointment i found on the ds lite :o :( :'(. not only that but i even believe the video quality was better. so for the ds lite i guess theres no more music or video like the phat, but then again look at it sexy look and beautiful color bright screen :smitten: you just cant stay mad at it. :)

the only change in the video quality is the brightness of the screen, and the only change in sound quality is the speakers, headphones and a change of brightness should fix both problems

Just want to add here  ......at the end of the day its a DS not a dedicated MP3 player .. its not really supposed to play MP3's is it !? :)

but will agree that the sound is a little DULLER than the PHAT but still nice enough to play games with :)

edit just found out that the sound specs are ADPCM/PCM  and PCM is WAV format ... not ideal for MP3 sound anyhow :(

Hi

Kkan, does that mean using WAV files we'll result in better sound quality?

Not that I really care that much, since my phat plays music plenty good enough for me, but I want to know because... I just do.  >:(

no ideas maby try it if moonshell supports wav playback ,

Anyhow  I just go with the specs laid out by nintendo and tech knowledge I already have and experience :)

If the sound is good enough and works for you then thats fine ..

I was mearly pointing out the obvious that its a games console and not a music player that is geared up and has the processing /EQ that a real music player has such as an I-POD, WALKMAN, WALKMAN PHONE etc that can get the most out of your music :)
