DS lite freezing and crashing, possibly due to firmware

I hadn't used my DS lite in a while due to work loads and no time. I picked it up the other day to try the TI calculator emulator for math. I upgraded the firmware for my SupercardSD from 1.6 to 1.81. I started to play games again as well, namely Mario Kart and Pokemon Diamond. I'd never had a problem before, besides the fact i don't think the left shoulder button works anymore. In Mario Kart i noticed one of the karts for Yoshi didn't appear and instead the background was kind of flashing I then got black screens after selecting an option in the menu. In Pokemon the game has frozen on me a few times now after playing for around 30mins. Both these games worked perfectly before. I came here and read about how skipping firmware versions doesn't help. So i went back to 1.7 then 1.8 then 1.81 but Pokemon is still freezing. Do i need to go back to 1.6 or could i go back to 1.7 and stay there or is there a way of overcoming this?

You should try repatching your roms with the latest 2.60 patcher since you upgraded to the 1.81 firmware.  That will probably fix it, though it could be a more major issue I'm unaware of.

You can transfer saves over fine, it's just the DSQ files that should be replaced.

I did patch pokemon with the latest patcher however Mario Kart hasn't been.

It is the SupercardSD and i use a super key in slot 1, the SD card is a sandisk 256MB. I may try my other cards and see the results. I have 2 Dick Smith Electronics 60x 1GB and a Transcend 80x 1GB also a couple of micros with adaptors.
The only factors that come into it in my mind are:
The firmware as it was after upgrading from 1.7 to 1.81 that this has happened but i went back and did it properly.
and also not having used it in a while maybe something somehow has deteriorated like the left shoulder button that doesn't seem to work.

play a genuine game (or use pictochat) and see if it gives you any problems. if it happens, then it'll be something wrong with the ds.

i had one which would freeze if you pressed the buttons too hard or if you held the ds too tight. i think some chips must have lost connection (become unsoldered) from the board - i've sent it back to nintendo and just waiting for a reply.

1.81 for scsd is a .bin file, so it does not matter when you apply it.

are you sure your supercard is geniune?
have you noticed the card heating up at all?
if you knock or hit the ds or press the buttons hard, can you intentionally make it freeze?

I'm pretty sure its genuine, doesn't heat up, can't intentionally make it freeze. I'll try and find my copy of metroid to give it a go. The problem seems to be occurring less frequently but that may be a matter of luck. If it is the ds though it will be annoying as it is just out of warranty.

Just updating the problem. I don't think I can freeze it on purpose. I found my Original Metroid cartridge and tried that out. That plays perfectly and even my left trigger works again. So it looks like either my Supercard or Superkey is kicking it. I still get freezing in pokemon after playing for 10-20mins and mario kart blacks out after i select something in the menu at some point (It usually allows my one race). I'm thinking i'll downgrade the firmware on my SupercardSD from 1.81 and see what happens, are there any dangers associated with downgrading or can anyone else identify a possible problem. It could be the roms but Pokemon Diamond is the version that is compatible with latest firmware and patcher which i used for it. The other thing I noticed with Pokemon but not with Mario Kart is every so often when running the game seems to pause for like a millisecond. like it skips a frame or something, has anyone encountered this or know about it?
THanks
