If this an allowable question, I was wondering of any freeware DVD rippers avaible on the net. If this is not, someone can lock this post.

I'm not really sure if there are better ways of doing it as I don't do this too often, but I use DVDDecrypter for ripping and AutoGK for encoding.

dvddecrypter was outlawed long ago the author lightninguk was ordered to cease development and hand over the code about a year or more ago now by the authorities etc and tools like DVD FAB DECRYPTER took its place  :)

auto gordon knot (autogk) is the tool used by most to convert dvd to xvid/divx :)

I hadn't really looked into finding a replacement so cool, I'll check out DVD FAB DECRYPTER.

Hello world,

I"ve got some good news and some bad news.Let's start with the good.... (tumble weed passes by)Ok, and now onto the bad: DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 is the last version you"ll ever see.We hoped this day would never come, but it has, and I can promise you, nobody is more gutted about it than I am.

What started as a bit of fun, putting a GUI around some existing code, turned into something that I can only describe as 'part of me' ' yes, I know that's sad ;-) As I"ve recently been made aware (by a letter, hand delivered to my door, last Tuesday), due to some law that was changed back in October 2003, circumventing copy protection isn"t allowed.

Ok so it has taken a while (almost 2 years), but eventually "a certain company" has decided they don"t like what I"m doing (circumventing their protection) and have come at me like a pack of wolves. I"ve no choice but to cease everything to do with DVD Decrypter.I realise this is going to be one of those "that sucks - fight them!" kinda things, but at the end of the day, it"s my life and I"m not about to throw it all away (before it has even really started) attempting to fight a battle I can"t possibly win.

If 321 Studios can"t do it with millions, what chance do I have with £50?! As I"m sure most of you have already noticed, the site has been down for a few days. That surprised me as much as the next person (slight breakdown in communication), or I would have issued this statement on it directly.

So anyway, from this point forward, I"m no longer permitted to provide any sort of assistance with anything that helps people infringe the rights of "a certain company".That means, no more emails, no more forum posts, no PM"s, no nothing! END OF STORY.The domain name will be transferred over to the company by the end of the week (9th June, according to the undertakings I have to sign) so don"t email it thinking "Oh, I"ll just ask LIGHTNING UK! for support on this". You"ll not be getting the intended recipient and could be landing yourself in sh1t!

With 3.5.4.0 being the last version, it makes sense for everyone to disable the "check for new versions" feature, as obviously there won"t be any. Of course what I really mean is that you should all stop using the program out of respect for the company's rights.

Anyone hosting DVD Decrypter is advised to cease doing so immediately. I"ve the feeling they won"t stop with just me. I"m having to contact anyone I know of that is (at the very least, the "mirror" sites), and tell them to stop. Copies of those emails must also be sent to the solicitors so they can check I"m doing everything I"m supposed to. If I don't, I die.

It is of course down to the owners of those sites to react how they want to. It"s not my job to force you to do anything you don"t want to, I"m just giving you some friendly advice. Maybe it"s just me, but I see this as a bit of an "end of an era". I realise there are other tools, but there"s no telling how much longer they"ll last, and not only that, mine was the oldest! I"ve met loads of great people over the years and I want to take this opportunity to wish them every success for the future - yes DDBT peeps, that includes you lot! : "(I hope you"ve all enjoyed my contribution to the DVD scene and maybe I"ll see ya around sometime.

I prefer dvdshrink 3.2.0.15 (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm )for backing up and used to use dvd decryptor but the newer version of it is called ImgBurn.

From the first ver 1.0.0.0 (now at v2.3.2.0) http://www.imgburn.com/
QuoteAs I'm sure you all know, DVD Decrypter was shut down due to legal reasons. Not wanting to waste all my hard work, I'd like to introduce you to ImgBurn! - (Say hello ImgBurn) - "Hello" :o)

ImgBurn is an enhanced version of the 3.5.4.0 burn engine - and it will continue to get better and better as time goes on.

I hope in time you'll grow to like ImgBurn as much as you did DVD Decrypter

I also recommend anydvd from slysoft www.slysoft.com to help with the disk protection when making backup copies of the dvd you own.

LOL hate to break it to ya onekelly but shrink also outlawed too

from the shrink site

DVD Shrink is freeware. However, due to U.S. laws, we can't host nor directly link to it.

Please use the following search engine below to find your own copy

the search engine is GOOGLE lol :)

most tools like this were jumped on LONG AGO!

AND slysoft  (clone dvd etc) jumped ship and moved to Antigua where laws dont apply  ;D

Kkan, i am fully aware that shrink was outlawed. I was just giving info on where to find info on programs. If you choose to use the dl button, that is up to you. If you choose to read about each product, that is also good. The poster asked for free rippers, he did not ask if they were legal in the usa or not. In fact i do not know which country he is from. There are many persons on this board who are not from the usa. As far as i know he COULD be from Antigua.

I just answered his post with the knowledge i had.

yeah agreed shrinks ok but you still need some kinda css decryption running if your using shrink as it will trip over with later protections such as later versions of ARcoSS protection when using a latest release original dvd, so my suggestion is to use ANYDVD its another slysoft product thats pretty good to sit in the taskbar and removes ccs on the fly :)

okay, good point; i shouldve included that; what are good freeware dvd rippers that can be used legally in the usa? Although the answer is probably is none (maybe the dvd fab decrypter?). I guess one could buy a dvd ripper, but thats also technically fringe when it comes to copyright protection.

oh and how would one take the backup and burn it a dvd?

Take a look at this page by scuba pete http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/tutorial007.html This site has lots of pictures/tutorials, and you can use imgburn instead of dvddecrypter in the tuturial, as they are the same program.

I also think the imgburn has a tutorial on how to use that programs as well, (it is what you should also be using for Wii dvd backups  :cool2: )

with the exception here that Imgburn NO LONGER DECRYPTS..... its purely just for burning imgs/isos/bin+cue files and other such dvd/cd full disk formats ;)

onekelly

I never said that Imgburn DECRYPTS… Instead of quickly typing what you thought I stated and actually looked at the aforementioned tutorial link, you would have noticed that the tutorials are labeled Shrink/Decrypter or Shrink/Nero. I mentioned that he can use the updated imgburn instead of decrypter without in ill effects (within the tutorials).

We are getting way off topic, sorry for that charpsp20.

Though if you want to point out an error in what I stated it would be in my first post, that you use dvdshrink to backup the disk and imgburn. I left out the purpose of imgburn, which is to copy the backup back to dvd. As for anydvd, I stated using it in my first post, so i feel there is no need to say use it in each following post.

Charpsp20, there are many ways to backup a dvd (just as many as there are opinions on the subject). I was giving you what works for me and many of the persons I know. Take it for what my opinion is worth. :D
