Nintendo Supports Wii Mod Chip Raid

32 federal search warrants in 16 states acted upon

Nintendo today applauded the actions of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents, who executed 32 federal search warrants in 16 states as part of an investigation into the distribution and sale and of mod chips for various consoles. These grayware modifications are designed for several consoles, including the Wii. Functionally, they circumvent copy protection allowing pirated content to be played on the system.

"Nintendo and its developers and publishers lost an estimated $762 million in sales in 2006 due to piracy of its products," said Jodi Daugherty, Nintendo of America's senior director of anti-piracy. "Nintendo's anti-piracy team works closely with law enforcement officials worldwide to seize mod chips and counterfeit software. Since April, Nintendo has seized more than 91,000 counterfeit Wii discs globally."

They could do with doing something about ebay UK, where people are selling modded Wii's with 40 games included- all pirarated by the looks of things!

YOU COULD always IMPORT  :P  ;D

personally, If it wasn't for piracy I wouldn't have even considered a wii or psp...too damn expensive.  I mean $50 a pop for one game is insane, and I need a better job lol

thats my biggest gripe for consoles is ....

A) the initial lay out for new consoles and the games for them and  more so if your a child thats saving up for a new console or a new game... most of which are VASTLY overpriced even tho most of them are supposed to be aimed at children :(

and

B) theres a whole heap of games out there that really are not worth the money or do not justify the money or are over too quick to be worth the money!

more people would be inclined to buy if games and consoles were cheaper ... moreso inline with the rest of the world!

example :- UK prices are VASTLY inflated and over priced compared to the US and JAPAN in somecases practically DOUBLE!

having 3 kids of my own I know for a fact how expensive things can become when ALL 3 want a new console or all 3 want the SAME CONSOLE and want the SAME games to battle each other ... I've been down that path of POKEMON GAMES X3 at £40 a time  :o :o :o + 3x GBA SP's NEW its not cheap :(

thats the main reason I looked into and bought flash cards for the GBA SP's for the price of around 6 new games at the time I bought them It was worth the money in the long run not having to buy a new game x3 every other month or try to trade them in and get a half decent trade in price to get something to replacement thats worth while actually trading for!

this is prolly the same reason about 90% of console owners that have some kind of mod device/cart to use backups instead of spending £30-£60 a pop on naff games!

anyhow point made and drifting off topic here .... I will stop ranting and let this thread resume to normal service  ;D

Devil_Spawn

i swear you cant replicate wii disks... how can they have seized 91000? or do they mean modchip compatible ones

fexo

I'm sure it is the mod-chip compatible ones; certainly the pics of the ones on e-bay UK look original, but they must be printed ones.

What I can't believe is the audacity of the ebay people who basically tell you these are for a modded Wii. One even says that it is a Japanese console, but the game menu is in English once you insert the disc.

The unfortunate situation with the EBAY stuff is that people out there are GULLABLE and more often than not don't have a clue what they are actually buying... so they are duped into thinking these are legit sales and goods ...

If you have ever seen a pirate GBA rom it even comes with a proper altho printed sticker on the cart and a glossy printed box and glossy printed instructions the only way to tell that its a fake is to look at the back of the cart it says NINTONDO and not NINTENDO and you will note that they don't show the back of the cart in their ebay photos so at first glance it does look entirely genuine :)

same goes for disk based games the quality of these printed disks out there are practically on the level of how the real ones came off the press in the real factorys ...

A lot of game piracy on the larger scales are fully fledged production lines out there churning out like a real genuine production line... they are not the average joe bloggs at home with a disk printer and a flair for arty disk box covers and labels they are out there to make big money which they do!  EBAY are even caught short most of the time this is why the sales are out there without being pulled as without actually handling these items physically they cant tell either :)

A classic example is the quality of the fakes out there are getting so good its even taking some store owners for a ride when copies or fakes are exchanged for a real legit game in a trade in! :o (I have a mate that worked in gamestation for a while and said that they had a few in like that) :o

But... that's stupid... when you trade in a game you have to give the people your address and phone and sign a contract. What happens when the store owners find out?

Clearly this is different from the UK; my son traded in Super Monkeyball and was given £18 credit to a new game after just a quick glance at the quality of the disk. It was his money and he was paying cash, so there was certainly no way things could have been traced if it were not genuine.
