I have everything set up, in fact, I even adjusted the pot to about 150, however the discs are not booting. There are 2 things that could be messing it up (at least I think so)

1) Crap miniDVDs
2) The actual DVD burner

The DVDs I'm using: http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4483
And I'm using a LightScribe DVD writer (not sure of the company).

Does anybody have any experience with this type of problem?
My Music

Nearly all of my songs are made with Fruity Loops, except for one where I used Reason. I recommend looking at my ambient stuff, and staying away from old songs, which are pretty crappy.

what ID do they check out as using DVD IDENTIFIER FREEWARE tool

tell me or paste here what the results are of the disk id specs etc :)

but looking at them it maby the disks are a bad dye layer which can also be a read issue with movie/pc dvds etc what speed are you burning at?

try burning at 1x or 2x speed and see how it goes :)

could also be the burner too but very doubtful ... I say its far more likely to be the media thats the issue here :)

I'll check out the program in a bit, but I can tell you that Nero Burning Rom doesn't allow me to burn the discs at any speed besides 4, and 8x. Maybe I should try switching software?

hmmmm they are made in TIWAN and reading some reviews they are hit and miss some people say they are fine for PS2 (guessing thats for full sized dvds though!) others hate them and compate them with CMC (worst dvd make ever avoid)  try IMGBURN freeware burn tool and see if you can burn at a lower speed  :)

I'm no expert but i think the pot is set a little too low at 150, way too strong.

Try @200, also give the lens mounting a litle push down and release on it's spring a couple of time to make sure it's sitting nicely. (sounds mad but worked for me on one cube i looked at).

And to confirm my experineces with cube, yes it is usually fussy about discs (mine detests TY02's), but usually this present a DRE problem, not a complete not recognise disc error.
Yes I'm mad

JohnnyDrama

Stick with IMGBURN.  You can (and should from what I've learned) set the burn speed to 1x

Also, I have had great experience with Ridata 4x Mini DVD-R.  I found an awesome deal on them from this guy on eBay:

Or his eBay store if that link gets old:   http://stores.ebay.com/Erics-Media-Store

Alright, 200 it is, but when you say the lens mounting I'm not sure what you're talking about. Do you mean I push down on the black square surrounding the little screw?

Thanks a lot for the help so far guys, if this method doesn't work I'll probably end up buying those Ritek Discs that JohnnyDrama linked to (I've also heard great things about them, and that's a sweet deal).

EDIT: OK, I set to 200, still not loading. I've tried burning the DVD using IMGburn, and I set to 1x however, I noticed that the write speed was still 4x, but the copy speed was 1x. Before I spend more money on DVDs, I'm going to start trying out different burning softwares.

I mean when you open the lid with the eject button you can see the lens. Push down on the  plastic square surounding it. It's siting on a spring..give it a couple of flicks. 99% it will do nothing, but i swear this did bring a cube I was looking at back to life a while ago, and it's been going strong ever since.

But i think your problem is most likely the discs.  Is the dye on them more pinkish than purple ? Those TY02's I mentioned I had earlier were that colour and were next to useless on my cube.

If you have any decent full size discs, test them on the cube with the top off.
Yes I'm mad

brujagio

It's definitely purple, but I'm gonna try using a full size disc with the top off. However, I've heard somewhere that the disc has to be completely full to work, is this true?

no... just burn standard .gcm .iso (@1.35gb big) files with imageburn or whatever... the GC laser can only move so far out on the disc anyhow.

question.. are you positive that you are adjusting the correct pot ?? the one on the underside of the dvd drive ?

I take it your running gcos or something, and thats all booting up correctly ?

Yes I'm mad

kkan

will add here that just about 99% of ALL writable dvds are some kind of PURPLE SHADE only commercial dvds are SILVER!

various gradients are not really the issue its the QUALITY of the DYE used which can be determined by the ID of the disk .. which you will find with DVD IDENTIFIER as mentioned above .... ones to AVOID are TDKS any that are labelled CMC magnetics or anything magnetics ... RIDATA these are not even genuine RITEKS they just stole the name to cash in on the sales and any kinda disks that are sposed to be commercial brand names such as BASF and VERBATIM and MAXELL etc they tend to be CMC or other CHEAP and nasty brands of c graded medias :(

try at least go for something thats labelled as A or B grade as these tend to be better all round for most things  ;)

how do I know this ... YEARS of experience and prolly THOUSANDS of dvds burned for Data,Video and Music/multimedia as well as backup purposes  ;)

Finally try find a brand you like and works and try stick with it  :)

Devil_Spawn

just to add i have a pack of ridatas and after using the first 5 or so disks and realising how bad they were the next 20 or so have been used for meaningless purposes as they were barely safe to store data on

Ya, GCOS is booting up fine. I should mention though, awhile ago (even before I adjusted the POT) the game would boot occasionally, and then freeze. I'm 100% positive that I'm adjusting the right one, I followed the guide on modthatcube. I'm guessing the only solution at this point is different miniDVDs, or just buying a case replacement. Speaking of which, I burned a regular disc, and by the time I went to test it out I realized that without any case on the cube it thinks that the disc tray is open, so the game doesn't even start spinning at all. How do I trick it into thinking the tray is closed? If a regular disc works, I'm probably just gonna end up getting a case replacement. Thanks again for all the help , I appreciate it a lot :P

if its like the old PS1 then there will be a clip/pin thing on the lid that fits a hole in the top of the case and u just need to press the button down thats in that hole with something for the disk to spin up so maby theres an associated contact pad on the board to utilise this :)

or will be to do with the locking mechanism of the flip lid ... dont have a cube anymore to test or see :(

meangreenie

towards the back of the console you can see two small parrallel/upright aligned levers (where the hinge for the lid would be if the top was on)... just tape them down or blue tac them..or hold down with your fingers while the disc boots
