Zorlin's English Pack for Supercard DSOne OS3 + OS3 SP1. || Latest ZEP version: 1.02

Note: To use the above download, you must be logged in.

What is ZEP?

Basically, ZEP is a complete rewrite of the Supercard Team's global.ini and language.ini files, but in proper English with better grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Why? Read on.

ZEP or Zorlin's English Pack consists of 2 files, Language.ini and Global.ini.
Language.ini, put simply, is a file that defines what menus and windows etc will use as their text. Originally, the language files for the English Supercard DSOne were very poorly translated from their original language. The global.ini file contains important settings for moonshell, and comes with English documentation included. However, again, the translation job was, to be fair, not exactly the greatest, and the instructions etc given cannot easily be understood.

ZEP's purpose is to change all of that.

Global.ini also has settings regarding what file types will be/will not be displayed. For those of you who are in love with the OGG-Vorbis audio format/codec, you'll be pleased to hear that OGG support is built into the Supercard DSOne's version of MoonShell. However the functionality is hidden because OGG files are not accessible due to the file type restrictions.

In short: ZEP's global.ini file, as well as doing a number of other functions, unlocks OGG support.

After 1.10, ZEP will include proper English documentation etc for global.ini, language.ini, and also skin.ini. 1.03 or 1.04 will add support for OS3 SP2.

FAQ:

Q: How do I install it on my Supercard DSOne?
A: Just download the official firmware for your DSOne, and install it.
Then simply download ZEP, unzip/unrar it, and copy "Skin.ini", "Language.ini", and "Global.ini" from the /default/ folder.

Q: How do I install it on my Supercard DSOne-SDHC?
A: Using the exact same method as for the regular DSOne, the only difference being that you will probably download a different firmware. ZEP is compatible with *both* versions of the DSOne.

Q: I want to use ZEP in my own skin, how do I do this?
A: Open /custom/Skin.ini for information on how to do this.

Q: How much is changed?
A:
There are many changes; so what might be best is simply to read the changelogs within the download. This is a complete rewrite, but all the features etc are preserved and *some hidden features have been unlocked ;)* [.ogg vorbis support]

Q: What does ZEP's Language.ini file do?
A:
The Language.ini file replaces nearly all of the text in the Supercard DSOne's version of MoonShell. As ZEP is written by a native English speaker, you'll probably find the Supercard DSOne far more tolerable to use once you have the ZEP language files installed ;)

Q: What are some of your other goals for this project?
A:
I aim to add documentation to the Supercard's INI files.
While the Supercard Team already has documentation, it is
poorly translated and needs a complete rewrite to make it easy
to understand. I also plan to make fully documented versions of
the files to help people who want to make skins. These "verbose"
versions will have far more information, not intended for actual
use as config files but moreso as "understanding" tools for the
config files :)

There will also be an extra verbose version of Skin.ini, and I aim to release a full tutorial on making skins, and a full tutorial on integrating ZEP into an existing skin.

To skin writers:
I wholeheartedly encourage the use of ZEP in your skins. But please give credit where credit is due, and perhaps a link back to this thread.

Anyways, have fun!

I believe so.
I see absolutely no reason why not.
If you want you can test it for me? :)
If it doesn't I'll make a custom one for the regular DSOne. :)
Regards
- Zorlin

PS: Just remember to back up your files beforehand.

Offtopic:
Just realised this might not be the *best* place for this thread.
If any of the mods and admins want to move it, feel free guys ^_^

Hey, thanks for all the appreciation 8)
Currently on holiday so updates are a bit delayed and I can't get on SCdev much.
If you want to apply this to your skin but don't have time/don't understand how, email me a link to the skin and I'll do it for you. But since I'm on holiday it might not happen very quickly.

I've decided to do the 1337-speak translation ASAP, so expect it soon!

I just checked the link: it's working, but only if you're logged in.
What is the problem you're having with it?
EDIT: Oh, I see what you mean. Firefox seemed to put up with my mistake fine, but not sure how other browsers will handle it. Fixed the link.

[shamelessbump]
Updated thread to make it easier to read :)
ZEP has reached 43 downloads! Soon after it reaches 50, I'll be releasing the next version  :)

Expect version 1.03 very very very soon :)

Version 1.03 will bring some small tweaks, more readability, a *LEETSPEAK TRANSLATION*, and other cool stuff.

i have tried making this a long time  ago but in the end it doesnt make any sense (english is not my first language)

Thanks for your encouragement.
I'm glad to see this project has potential. :)

If you have ANY suggestions, guys, please share them :)

Current information on version 1.03:

////1.03 Development To-do List/Status\\\\
- Make certain wording more clear - 100% DONE. FINISHED. WOOT.
- Add some more documentation to Global.ini
- Verify status with SP2 and add support for it [If necessary, there will be a seperate release for SP2 and SP1 :)]
- Leetspeak translation - 100% DONE. FINISHED. WOOT.
- Make plans for 1.04 - 90% done.

I know 1.03 was meant to be released today. I'm sorry but I didn't get around to it, IRL complications.
As soon as I get it finished and tested, I'll release it =(

Thanks for all your patience everyone, you're an awesome community and I love being here. I'm glad to see this project is being appreciated by so many of you ^_^

1.10 may take a while to release, but consider 1.03 the first "real" release of ZEP.

Zorlin

To ensure full compatibility with all OS3 + OS3 SDHC versions, and maximum quality/readability/standards I have totally scrapped my work on Global.ini and started over. As a result 1.03 has been delayed further.

Just did some verification:
Aside from a few extra *blank [useless] lines* the Global.ini files OS3 SP1 and SP2 [SDHC] are *EXACTLY* the same as the Global.ini file in OS3 SP1 [regular].

ZEP will officially be supporting 3.0, 3.0 SP1 + 3.0 [SDHC], 3.0 SP1 [SDHC], 3.0 SP2 [SDHC] with this release. :)

Its *almost* ready, and as soon as I can get this beta-tested, I'll have it released.

Zorlin

This project isn't dead yet. I know I promised a release and I let you guys down but I promise I'll have a release soon. It'll support SP1, SP2, and even SP3.

1.03 is coming. When it is done. Its coming. :)
I promise =(

Nice news. Hopefully you can do something about the 'dma' option getting covered up with text, the patching options.

dantheman

Does the current version work on the latest OSes?  If it does, I'd like to sticky this topic as it seems like a very useful utility that doesn't do any good sitting several pages back.
