I haven't been paying close attention to the DS homebrew scene that much lately, but this kept me bust for over an hour yesterday:

Honestly this developer is amazing... Don't mean to kiss his ass, but this, and nitrotracker are probably my favorite DS homebrews.

Devil_Spawn

yeah, this homebrew is great, ive been following it over at gbadev

socket

Yeah, I played it again today for a while during lunch... It rules.

I like these "play around with a virtual world" type games.  This, along with World of Sand, are among the simplest yet most entertaining homebrew apps available.  Wonder whatever happened to the version of Line Rider that was supposed to appear for the DS...

socket

yeah, i gave up waiting for that.... i agree, these kind of games are just pure creativity and a lot of fun.  i made a catapult and some other weird stuff with pocket physics today on the bus.  it sucks since it locks up sometimes, but still super fun.

Could someone post links to a tutorial as to how to use homebrew? This pocket physics looks like something the kids at the hospital might enjoy.
I would dig on the net for myself, but I don't get much net time at the hospital.
Thanks in advance ;)

Well, what exactly do you need help with?  I saw your posts in the RHS forum, so at least you know what a flash cart is, which makes it much simpler to explain.

For most homebrew, it's as simple as copying the *.nds file to your microSD card somewhere and launching it from your device's menu.  Some homebrew applications that utilize filesystem access (like PocketPhysics) have specific folders you need certain files to be in.  Usually the ReadMe file will tell you how to set it up, but in general it's usually pretty simple.

Thanks Dantheman,
I loaded Pocket Physics and the kids are playing it. It freezes from time to time but it's pretty good.
I just didn't know anything about the DLDI patching. Looks like the auto patching feature took care of it.
Now I am searching for a good ebook reader and some more games for the kids to play.

Oh right, DLDI, forgot about that.  Yeah, you've got auto DLDI patching so you usually will not have to worry about it.  Just make sure the kids save from time to time so they don't lose all their progress (and also make sure they're using the latest version, which decreased the amount of crashing dramatically).

For ebooks you have a few options.  You could try Moonshell or DSOrganize, both of which can read .txt files, but my personal preference is DSReader simply due to the fact that the fonts are so customizable.  You can copy and paste font files from C:\Windows\fonts and it will be able to use them.  Combine that with white text on a black background and the various anti-aliasing/subpixel rendering options for better reading and you've got yourself a great reader.  It does have a few caveats though, the main issue being the lack of scrolling ability other than one page at a time, and bookmarks only work if the text file doesn't have spaces in the filename.  You could also look into DSLibris, but I haven't tried that one out myself.

Dudu.exe

oficial supercard dldi for supercard one (SDHC at least) is problematic to SAVE in this app.. but you can get better dldi here

if you have problems to save get the new dldi and rename it to dldi.bin and copy to scshell folder

(there are 2 new versions for non SDHC )

Perseid

Thanks for the link. This is neat. And only 900K! :)

For me, the only thing i find frustrating about the game is that the touch feature doesnt really work for me. Also, it freezes.  :(

We have noticed the freezing and that the touch doesn't always work well. I thought maybe it was my card.
Maybe it will improve with time. It's a good way to pass time.
