It looks like to me that you did not push the tiny metal rod (for the R trigger or L trigger) inside the hole well enough.

EDIT: I just saw IMG_1499.jpg, and the black WiFi antenna cord is under the plastic, you should push it up a bit more, see if that helps somehow.

It seems the spring came on it upside down, you could try and uncoil it and flip it to where it should be

The spring that is sticking out is on backwards.  That is why you can't get it to stay.  Flip that sucker over so that the side that is supposed to go in the notch is lower than the side that goes into the shoulder button.

That should have been the first thing you tried!
