Alphabetical listing in SC menu?

I can't believe that the Supercard lists things by date modified rather than alphabetically.  It makes no sense.  I don't want to scroll through the whole list to find Alite which SHOULD by all rights be at the top.  I don't care about skins, and I don't think anyone else really does - they'd be nice but they're just eyecandy.  This is functionality we're talking about.  If we wanted eyecandy, we wouldn't be going with the lowest-priced cart.  We want functionality, something the Supercard has in spades, except for this one inconvenience.

DeVS

Fat Sort fixes that. Will make it where everything is alpabetic order. You can download it here: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4D90A8CC64A7F837

Yes I noticed that, on the SC CF my son uses, whenever you put on a new rom it always appears at the bottom of the list.

But strangely on my nephews SC CF it will appear in alphebetical order ???? wt..

the only conclusion I can come to is that it must be to do with the tech of the CF card, or somehow the 2 SC CF are different (they have the same firmware 1.62) .
Yes I'm mad

DeVS, I tried using a defragmenter on name sorting mode, it didn't help... is what you posted any different or would I just be wasting time and reducing CF lifetime?

Besides, I don't want a fix I'll have to run every time I add a new game, that's ridiculous.  It could be added to the Supercard firmware easily and is a more logical solution than the current ordering system.

The poor man's method using Windows Explorer...

This looks long but actually takes just a couple seconds.

1.  Make a new empty folder on your media card.

2.  Go to the existing folder on your media card containing the files to be sorted.

3. Sort the existing files however you wish.  ( You can use columns to sort OR View by icon and turn off AutoArrange, then drag files around to your desired order [favorites on top???])

4.  Select all files and CUT.

5.  Go back into your temporary folder and PASTE.

6.  The files will paste in your order.

7.  You can then remove the original (empty) folder and rename the new if necessary.

Fatsort doesnt defrag, it just alphabetizes the allocation table.
Your files will thus be alphabetized.

It sometimes corrupts long filenames though.

Altor

How long?  64 characters?  72?  96?  128?

Thanks for the program, I'll give it a try.

the FATSort doesn't work with my 2gb Sandisk SD... Comes with with an error of some sort...

is there any other methods than simply movin things off and then puttin it back on??? Any KERNEL UPDATES for SuperCard SD other than v1.62 that seems to make it alphabetical...

MOONSHELL, DSOrganize, and a couple others have them sorted so why doesn't the SUPERCARD SD???

thanks,

No, it will rename filenames to the old 8 character FAT format, so for example

Super Mario Bros.nes will change to

SUPERM~1.NES

which is a real problem when it happens to your save  files as they obviously no longer load with the game.

The FATSort homepage mentions this being a problem in the root folder, but I have experienced it in other folders as well.

Using my method above, you don't need to move anything off the card, you are just moving contents of a folder to another folder all within the media card.

This does NOT copy, it just moves files, which is instant.

Give it a try.  I do this all the time to keep my 4 year old's favorite stuff at the top and he is very happy.

I have all my games in their own folder, so I just used folder-only sorting and now everything's pretty and organized with no cropped filenames.  Good find, thanks.  I still wish the SC was bright enough to just do this on its own though.

thanks... simple fix as ya said!!!

Make a NEW FOLDER on the card... MOVE everything to it so there is the FILE sort fix... then simply move each folder back one by one in the order u want it to show up on the Supercard...

coo and quick...

anyways...

thanks,

PS: totally off subject but I'm freakin addicted to this new mario kart ds!!!!! OK there... First Rule is to admit you have a problem... :) lol
