"Best" GBA games?

DS is the first handheld system I've ever got, besides a couple things like tetris keychains, etc.  Anyway, this means I'm not at all familiar with GBA games...  All I can do is go to metacritic and check the average review score and assume any ones are above 8.5 are the ones worth looking at... but I've tried a few of them and haven't really been too enthralled.

The only GBA ones I've played and really enjoyed much are Advance Wars, Metroid Fusion/Zero, Fire Emblem, and Castlevania AoS.

Can anyone, without posting rom links, recommend some ones I might try?  Ones I'd be particularly interested in would be very long, very deep, or very replayable.  Replayability is the most important factor probably.

Homebrew is of course also appreciated - WITH LINKS! :D

Thanks

Musulsa

The games you listed are several of my favorites, so perhaps you might like a few of the other games that I enjoyed.

Fun Action Games:
Drill Dozer  (A MUST HAVE!)
Gunstar Super Heroes
Metal Slug Advance
WarioWare - Mega Microgame$

Fun RPGs:
Final Fantasy IV Advance
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Legend of Zelda - The Minish Cap (Another "MUST HAVE" game)
Tactics Ogre - The Knight of Lodis
Tales of Phantasia

Games that I like but are not my favorites:
Car Battler Joe
Contra Advance - The Alien Wars EX
Kirby - Nightmare in Dreamland
Mario Tennis Power Tour
Prince of Persia - Sands of Time
Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper

And finally you should definitely get "Ultimate Cards Games."  It is probably one of the best GBA games for long airplane rides.  Infinite replay value.  I hear there is a DS version coming out soon.

DeVS

Gotta agree with Musulsa, Zelda: The Minish Cap is a MUST have. Aswome game! Also I have enjoyed Mario and Lugi: Super Star Saga, Donkey Kong King of Swing, and Mario vs Donkey Kong.

I think Sword of Mana is a pretty good RPG, Pokemon Sapphire, Ruby, Leaf Green, Fire Red are all MUSTS, and Zelda the Minish Cap is really good too.  Harvest Moon is a game I really enjoyed, but I know its only for some people...

Jinnai

Have to second Tales of Phantasia and FFIV. Also try Golden Sun. Not as good as the other two, but still a good rpg. Sword of Mana i'd atleast try if I were you. And of course Zelda. :D

If you've played the PS1 version of Tactics Ogre, don't bother with the GBA one. If not, go ahead and play it. Also Dynasty Warriors might be a good one you'd like.

I would say Harvest Moon as well, but I don't know if you'd like it. It's a game you'd have to play for more than a few minutes to decide (because the first few minutes you'd probably decide you don't like it, but after a bit people change there mind).

PharaohsVizier

I completely forgot, Kingdom Hearts is pretty good, and some of those classic arcade game packs are worth playing too.

Altor

Strange I forgot to mention Minish Cap, I've already got that one.  I agree, awesome game.  I've been working my way through it, half an hour here, half an hour there for... I dunno, 6 months or something.  I'm being very meticulous though.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, sounds promising.

Some more good games:

Riviera: The promised Land
Sigma Star Saga (doesn't work on SC but definatly worth a play)
Astro Boy: Omega Factor
DBZ: Legacy of Goku 2+3 (the first one is actually the worst game ive played but 2+3 are excellent)
Goemon (japanese action platformer)
Megaman Battle Network 2
Mario Golf
Kirby and the Amazing mirror
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Wario Land 4
Tetris Worlds (not as good as Tetris DS tho)
All three Castlevanias
Dual Masters

I'll probably think of some more too.

Tales of phantasia is a pathetic mockery of one of my favorite SNES games.  If they couldn't make the port decent they shouldn't have bothered at all.

I have to agree, I thought Tales of Phantasia was pretty average, Riviera is definately a game to pick up, it is awesome...

Here's a few games that you won't usually see anyone mention but are very good.

1.  Medal of Honor Infiltrator:  This is a top-down stealth shooter similar to the original Metal Gear.  It has an ingenious strafe control that allow you to aim and dodge sort of like an FPS.

2.  Ninja Five-O:  Shinobi for the 21st Century.

3.  Super Army War:  Choplifter with a realtime strategy twist.

Wow, this has got me thinking,

you should try

Racing Gears Advance- Really good GBA only title, top down racer
Metroid Fusion - about as good as it gets on GBA I prefered this to Zero Mission.
Rock and Roll Racing
Mario Vs Donkey Kong (really really fun!)
Advance Wars (only 1st one works on SC but it's awesome) - a good reason to have a GBA !!
Fire Emblem - Like advance wars but more fantasy RPG Like
Shining Force
Golden Sun - The reason I bought my first GBA!
Super Mario Advance 2 - MarioWorld
Pinball Challenge Deluxe (not sure if it works on SC)

Damn, got to play some of these again now!

So can I ask does gba compression work yet in SC again ? can I get around it with older patcher

I didn't mention "Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga" or "Street Fighter 2 Turbo" because neither of them run particularly well on the Supercard hardware.  M&L has crazy flickering everywhere and SF2T runs incredibly slow.

I consider AstroBoy and Ninja Five-O both fun mindless beat-em-ups but they are not for everyone.

Being a huge "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" fan, I absolutely loved "C:AoS" on the GBA and its DS sequel "C:DoS."  I've beaten each of the three games at least 3-4 times each.

I didn't particularly care for Circle of the Moon or Harmony of Dissonance, but maybe that's just me.

Quote from: "kraken"Tales of phantasia is a pathetic mockery of one of my favorite SNES games.  If they couldn't make the port decent they shouldn't have bothered at all.
What did you want them to do? They put in everything from the SNES version and a lot from the PSX version and you know it would never compare to the PSX version...

Altor

Please make sure everything you post is SC-compatible.  Is everything mentioned so far SC-compatible?

Thanks!!! This is turning out to be an AWESOME list!!!

PharaohsVizier

I'm not sure if the ones I mentioned are SC compatible, I use my EZ Flash 3 for GBA games :)
