well, according to the team who dumped it, there WAS no protection.  They said that it just couldn't be dumped using the standard (probably SMT) dumper due to some speed issues.  So they used their own custom dumper.

it works great. (the game).. playing it now

I am beginning to think it is not protection that is at fault, but the current dumpers inability to dump from carts that use slower wait states... hardware changes that didnt intentionally break the patcher (perhaps a different form/cheaper chip on the DS carts?)

I'd say that'd probably be the best bet. Slower wait state games should better for us too. I haven't been able to find any of the new dumps yet (I don't want a link, so don't send me one) but I'm wondering is viewtiful joe 1gigabit? Maybe the slower state carts are to compensate for the more expensive 512mb and 1gigabit carts. Or have their been 256mbit games of this new cart type dumped yet as well?

Viewtiful Joe is 512 mbit. It's one of the most visually impressive games yet on the DS. What's really handy is the top screen which zooms in on Joe.
What's really unhandy is the use of touch screen (scratch). In the middle of the action I can't seem to get my hands off of the buttons.

PS: The slo-mo button (L) is the coolest I have ever seen. It makes me run out on the street and show it to everyone...
