i know plenty of people have done this before and i was wondering

1. is swapmagic 3 a good softmod for ps2?
2. what do you guys recommend for the thick ps2 and the slim ps2?
3. where can i read more about the different mods for ps2 like a forum or site
4. that notes the pros and cons of each?
5. and what emulators on the ps2 do you recommend?

I use a messiah mod-ship and Hdloader with my 120gig Hd in the old style ps2.
Quite an old set up now (2+ years old) but it still works.

You cant play all games off HD, and theres more and more that you cant now days, which is why its nice to have a mod-chip as a back up to play imports/burns.
The DMS chip has more functionality and compatablity (it supports offcial HD games like Darkstalkers) but seeing as I dont have one I dont really know alot about it.

If you dont want to buy/install a modchip I'd recomend using HDloader of a memory card. This is where you boot Hdloader using a ps1 game and a special file on the memory card. Its a pain in the ass to set up but worth it to play things off the HD. You can then use magic/cog swap to play non-hd games.

But in my opinion having a chip is soooo much more convienient.

ive been using boot discs on my ps2 for 6 years now i started with memory manager plus but that would only boot up cd copys of games but there was no mod chips out then
then i got an early version of swapmagic which was fine for a couple of years untill newer games with higher toc would not boot so i got a backup copy of swapmagic 3.1 which i have to boot up with my origanal copy of swapmagic
plus ive got a harddrive & a backup copy of HDD loader which i boot up with my origanal copy of swapmagic
that all sounds time consuming but it only takes a few seconds
ive got over 350 backup games & everyone works with swapmagic (one way or another)
i cant say anything bad about swapmagic but getting it chipped would be better & easier

and how difficult is it to install the modchip if youve never done it before? and which cost more then the other? im not gunna get a HD cuz it just cost too much for me to buy one

PS i have a thick ps2 if that helps, the reason i wanted to know about the slim ps2 is because my cousin has the slim so a solution for both would be appricated

I got Swapmagic 3.5 and the Swaptools installed on my Slimline version 1. Works beautfully. No hard setup, just snap a few plastic bits into place and voila. Tho I did have to tac down the bit on the front cause it would pop off sometimes when I opened the tray. I know they had to update the Swaptools some for the newer versions of the slimline, so not sure if it is much more complex now.

alright then i guess me and my cousin are both going to get the swapmagic seeing as how its the easiest and cheapest
