I went to best buy the other day and looked at their store model and it had the crack on the left as well.  it was in one of them metal holders too so it could not be shut

I just called the support number and described my problem to the guy... He was very friendly BUT said that the crack described here (which mine has) is not covered in the free replacement and would be $50 + shipping...

PharaohsVizier

Wow thats gay, but don't worry, I bet in a month or so, a whole bunch of people will complain, and I'm sure they'll offer replacements then...  I hope...

socket

Yeah, hopefully it will eventually be covered... mine is still one piece.... but i forsee it falling apart eventually.

I submitted the "claim" or whatever via nintendo.com...

I included the link to the pic, which I think helped:

i really hope the new ds lites (black and pink) dont have any of these issues when they come out.

ShinaKitsune

Yeah me too... I pre-ordered my pink one and fully paid it off and i dun want to have any problems with it since i am trying to sell my blue old style ds to pay for a ds-sized flash cart for it >.>

Alright, I'm not trying to start a whole thread of flaming because I revived an old thread.

Anyways, my DS Lite got a crack between the right shoulder button and the power LED, and the hinge has been a little looser than usual.  I treat it very very well, and well I got kind of pissed.  So I gave Nintendo of America a call and basically they said they'd fix it for free.  So just wanted to let you guys know that NOA is willing to fix it for free.  The coolest thing is that I found out that I live right by Nintendo's repair center for Western Canada, and they said I can just walk in there and get it fixed or replaced within a half hour.  :)

PS.  I found a pretty funny YouTube video about the DS Lite crack that I think you'll all enjoy.  http://youtube.com/watch?v=VCYiJk9JgbQ

I bought a DS lite exactly like this one to use with the new SHOCK! shell and since the shell isn't out for a couple more weeks I tried to have Nintendo repair it but the guy on the phone was totally gay and demanded 50 bucks to repair it.

I've looked the DS over and it looks like the Left side cracked and broke OPEN causing an obstruction at just the right spot on the DS hinge that it catches just before the top half completes its rotation into the full upright position. So when the original owner who was probably right handed opened his DS, (unknowingly) over what I'd think is a short period of time, he overly stressed the right side's hinge trying to get the full click. I have a good deal of experience with acryilic plasics and the spot where it breaks is just full of cracks, no stress marks, not one big break like it was hit off by a hammer. Nintendo really should be fixing these things for free. The guy who owned this one before me claimed it happened after a mear 2 months.

PharaohsVizier

Just call again, if you get some other rep they might do it for free like mine did.

Well, just noticed a crack in the left side of the screen hinge. Well this unit lasted almost two full months. This is why I am using the superkey, so I can proof the unit, before the exchange and warrenty runs out. Going to exchange it at Target tonight.

Question, does the black unit have the same problem as the white units? Are the newer white units not breaking?

ihopeyoudie2

I haven't seen a single cracked black hinge and all black DSes were released wayyy after Nintendo decided to fix these things for free. There's no proof that it wont crack but its still the smartest color choice.

I'm going to go for the walk-in service, will they replace my DS or repair it?  And if they replace it, can I say I want a black one?

Man, they probably lost a ton of money just from me, this is going to be my 4th DS, along with my friends who each replaced it like twice.
