Hey everyone,

sorry for the noob question, but I've done a search without really finding a clear answer.
Could anyone point out to me, what would be the benefit of flashing the NDS?
Everything is really working great with my supercard, and I am just curious about the actual use of flashing...

Again, very sorry if this has been answered a thousand times :)

I'm wondering the same, too. So far the only advantage I can see is that we would be able to receive and play "Download DS" games sent from a DS with an SC.

Also, the alternative firmware contains an anti-brick mechanism and an antivirus for the only DS virus around.

This is what I've understood in my first day with a DS, thanks to the forum ;).

i'd just use flashme :)

i did it and i'm happy.
oh and you're saving some battery power, since passme devices use some battery too :)

I've read something about problems with the brightness setting flashing Lite's, can you say if you who flashed had any?

From the various inormation I gathered around various boards is that witha flashed DS you can halt some of those nasty brick programs that are floating around posing as roms or homebrew software. that seems to be the biggest difference in the issue.  If you are planning to flash your DS, BE VERY CAREFUL. if you don't know what you are doing you could in essence destroy your DS to the point where it won't work.

I have a flashed DS phat, but I did not flash my DS lite (yet) for the simple fact that I want to pass the break in period so to speak. What I mean by that is the first couple of months. I had to return it after 14 days cause the right trigger became really flaky. So now I have another one, want to see if there are any issues with it, the r button or cracking, etc...

So my suggestion is this, if you have a phat DS flash away, and if you have a DS lite wait a couple months to see how things go with it, then flash. If you have reliable source of roms (or whatever you do with it) there is no need to worry.

I flashed mine but I'm still unable to crank up the brightness, when I go to the options it just turns it on or off.. this is with the most recent version of flashme also.

There really isnt much difference in flashing your DS or using a superkey type device.
Using a superkey device means you will not be mod'ing you ds so if anything happens you can safely get it repaired.
It also means you dont run the risk of bricking your DS (I note the out cry that DS lites brick uber easily and Nintendo must have blocked flashme seems to have stopped :) )
These are the two main reasons to use SuperKey: low risk use.
If you do go ahead and use flashme the extra benefits you'll gain are:
Able to use the DS for downloading multiplayer play (only downloading mind you), use DS-link, no more health or superkey splashes, and you wont have to remember to bring your superkey with you.
So I guess its up to you whether or not you need these extras.

Ummm there are 2 versions of the Flashme v7, one for DS Lite and one for the old DS.  If you flash a DS Lite with the old DS, it will not have the brightness settings.  But it is easy to correct it, you don't even need to flash it again, simply run the program (the new one).

There is two versions of flashme v7, one is a beta and one is the final. Not for the old style ds and the lite. The beta was just that beta, and has been floating around the internet alot as the final... also from the real/main flashme site the link to download seems broken.
I have no idea what version of the flashme v7 i have right now, it is supposed to be the final but I do not have a lite right now only 2 normal ones that it worked just fine on.
As for flashing vs non-flashed.
It doesn't matter too much anymore now that the 3rd generation passme devices are the same size as a ds cart... it takes a debatable amount of power... but the only thing is you will still have the splash screens, which some people just want to get to what they want to play and not worry about splash screens or a pretty gui.

Thanks very much for all these answers :)
I don't think I'll flash in the end. Everything is working so well at the moment, that I don't really see that much need for flashing, in the light of all that has been said above.

Thanks again to all,

..imo Flashing firmware contains an anti-brick mechanism -only of use if one downloads 'shady' roms which can 'brick' one's DS...But the chances of that are ???

:)

Flashing = Cheaper if you know someone with a passthrough device. I have flashed my three DSes because I have a PassMe 2 = and it's both ugly and annoying to use all the time.
