I got a DS and Supercard but im thinking of adding a new handheld device.  Im currently looking at a GP2x.  plays mp3 divx, xvid and plenty of emulation.  Im also thinking of a PSP.  I dont know which one is better in terms of emulation and file playback option.  so what do you fellow SCdev readers sugguest?

well, the gp2x still has issues.. emulation with gp32 is spot-on.  I don't have either.  PSP is great for emulation though.. I run neogeo, capcom arcade, snes, genesis, gameboy, and other emulators on it with no issues.. very nice screen too.

there's even a GBA emulator and n64, but neither is at a final stage yet

Does the gp2x do movies of any sort

If you plan on even considering the psp, be sure to read up about it first so you know which versions that you should get if you want to emulate it.

yeah.. forgot to mention that.. lol.. i have one running firmware 1.5, and I had one with 2.0 which i upgraded to 2.71 and then the other day downgraded to 1.5, leaving me 2 PSPs running 1.5.

as long as you get one with firmware 2.71 or below, and NOT with a TA-082 motherboard, you'll be fine

well im going with the GP2x.  Since like a friender system.  and it plays divx and xvid.  I love my supercard but the DS is limited in terms of emulation.    thanks for the replies

the PSP's dpad and firmwire issues were the key factors.

There's also the Gizmondo. I contributed quite a bit to the machine already. I released some unreleased titles not too long ago, but we're talking emulation right? I also released a nice launcher application and donated a Gizmondo to Reesy (of DrMD fame) and he ported the emulator to the device. The device already sports near perfect SNES emulation (except sound), Genesis/SMS/GG, NES, C64, Mame, Amiga amongst others. It has a great d-pad, solid feel and takes standard cheap SD cards. It should be considered another handheld emulation alternative. Check www.gizmondoforums.com for more details.

Sorry... what a stupid choice.

The PSP is lightyears ahead of the GP2X in all ways. There are no firmware issues if you get a 2.71, downgrade it to 1.5 and devhook lets you emulate the latest firmware. (2.81 was just sorted the other day for this. the next versions of devhook'll incorporate it.)

The psp has a movie player called pmp mod, which plays at a quality and rate that the gp2x couldn't hope to compare with, and also the emus on gp2x aren't quite as accomplished in terms of snes, neogeo etc. Also, PSP's got daedalus. The awesome n64 emu.

The control issues are easily taken care of with a quick removal of the faceplate and some changes to the backs of the buttons (a monkey could do it) and the homebrew community is MUCH larger than a device which has the sole purpose of being a homebrew console.

Go with a psp. I have a PSP, a DS Phat, a gba micro right now. In the past I've had a Zodiac, GP2X and loads more. Eventually the PSP made each of them redundant, so i sold them.

PSP and DS exist beautifully together. The GP2X is barely a step up from the ds.

the battery time with the gp2x is also horrible, it runs off of AAs and lasts about 2 hours no matter what ya do (until you downclock the cpus/lcd), and the psp has 802.11.

I would go with the 2x, yes it is still evolving but you have no big corp forcing you to upgrade / downgrade firmware to do different things. If you get decent rechargables you can get 5 hours plus out of your 2x i know i do! my son has a PSP and I would not part with my 2x. i currently have a Ds lite, GBA Micro and a GP2x and love all of them!!!
