My Wiikey is 1.9g right now and I just got Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli.  Slipping the disc it asks for a system update which automatically triggers my alarm bells and sirens.  My Wii right now is 3.0U and I'm leery that it might render my Wii useless with respect to backed up games.  I'd like to ask if anyone knows of what this is and what can I do about this?  Is this a harmless update?  Is something nasty going to happen?  Help!

Its safe to upgrade - none of the upgrades have affected backups - aside from truca signed disks. But you can boot them with the gecko channel

I'll try it later.  Though I have no clue what the GeckoOS is.  Seems like a homebrew channel.

For reference, Ferrari Challenge US release updates the Wii firmware to 3.1U.
