Nintendo's Media Summit has just thrown us its first juicy bone of the night, and it's a big one. As was previously rumored, Satoru Iwata has revealed the Nintendo DSi, the direct successor to the DS Lite. Hit the break and refresh for regular updates!

  • Overall size has been reduced -- DSi is 12% or 2.6 millimeters slimmer than the Lite.
  • Comes with an external 0.3 Megapixel camera (for 640 x 480 pixel pictures) and a VGA camera located on the hinge, directed towards the user. You'll be able to edit pictures using the touchscreen.
  • Full music playback functionality, including adjustable pitch and playback speed.
  • Both screens have been expanded to 3.25 inches.
  • SD memory card slot is included, and there'll be on-board memory also.
  • Will ship with an built-in Nintendo DS web browser.
  • DSi will allow users to download games from DSWare, a new service that operates with Wii Points -- or, as they are now known, Nintendo Points.
  • Logging onto DSWare for the first time will grant users 1,000 free Nintendo Points.
  • DSWare comes in four pricing categories: free (!), 200 Nintendo Points, 500 Nintendo Points, and 800 Nintendo Points.
  • Will come in lovely matte white and matte black. Begone, foul fingerprints that have taunted us so!
  • And finally, it launches on November 1st in Japan, and will cost ¥18,900, or roughly $179.

This looks promissing, like jmr, my daughter was looking at getting a new dslite as her phat is getting tired. Glad we did not rush out last week and get one!

Nintendo of America chief Reggie Fils-Aimé just announced that the DSi won't be released in North America until "well into calendar year 2009."  So unless you are going to try to import one from the Nov 1 Japan release (good luck on that one!), you have a long wait.

I think this is where the slot-2 flash carts are really going to take a backseat now.  I'm still not sure if I want one of these.  It almost seems like they want to phase out the DS...  :'(

Speaking of which... LOL.. My brother's SC Lite is still available in the marketplace.  But seriously, yeah, if I played my DS more and hadn't ordered the Pandora, I'd probably pick one of these suckers up.  Too bad they waited so long to add these features.

Quote from: fexo on October 02, 2008, 05:03:10 AMThe question is will the flashcards still work?

Even more important to me... will it play American games?

I mean... I want to import one. I recall that Nintendo also said at their conferance that this won't be released in the US for a looooooong time. The Nintendo DS, remember, is doing much better in the US than it is in it's home country of Japan, where it's tied in a very close race with Sony's PSP.

I. DON'T. LIKE. WATING.

I want to import this. But I know that's silly if it can't play American games. For some games it doesn't matter, but for others, with lots of text... well, I can't read Japanese.

Isn't the current Nintendo DS region free? I don't think they'd remove that feature, they have no reason to. On the other side, I think DSware will be region-locked.
I'm going to preorder one from here: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-170-49-en-70-3161.html and hope that flashcards still work, if they don't I'll keep my DS Lite (that's until a company makes a flashcard that works [it will happen eventually]), if they do work then I'll sell my DS Lite.

I'm sure it won't ne too lond before the SD slot is cracked and you wont need a flash card!

The funny thing about the current Nintendo DS is that in Sundays add at Target and Fred Meyers (Krogers) in my town, they have the Special edition Susan Komen breast cancer edition with the Pink Ribbon on the front of a white DS lite. If i did not know that the new DSi is coming out next year, I most likely would've bought this one for my daughter.
