Fuses and where to find them

First of all it's good to find a DS forum that has a healthy mix of homebrew and hardware discussion, I find most are heavily weighted towards the former.

Now, I read in  a tutorial that the correct fuse to be using is the C2Q 500 but afaik this is a specific ref number for the manufacturer and not the actual fuse itself. Is there any universal way to idenitfy these if one were to walk into a shop and ask? Using the size, (0603) and the resistance of 500 mA brings up all sorts of results, some resistors and others which I have no idea whether it would be usable. For example I found this:
http://www.nangle.co.uk/acatalog/LITTELFUSEranger453.html

It looks right, but I'm not entirely sure. Could I go wrong as long as i get the right size and amp?

On a slightly different topic, is a brand new fuse actually nessecary? Would the wire solder be regarded as a temp fix or as can it be used as a permanent solution for every day (non flashing) normal DS use?

Thanks and I hope we can get some good discussion going :)

I found this:

I think it's right, size and amp is anyway, not sure if there is any other considerations. I think it's fast blow too, they say 'super quick' so I assume thats the same. Not trying to advertise btw, I'm in no way affiliated with these sites, just trying to clarify what we can use for fuses.
