is it possible to do this? and if so how? i tried burning gcn games to a dvd and running them through the backup launcher but the wii just resets do i need a certain homebrew program or can they only be run if a modchip is installed at the moment?

As far as I know its not possible no - You need a hardware modchip to play Gamecube games.
