I have been reading a little of the 360 modding for dummies book and was wondering if you have to sata connection for the drive to flash it or is there another way to do it? Also, i do not know which drive model it is yet but tonight/tomorrow morning i will.

Ok, i guess i will be buying a sata to pci card. I think they are like 12-14 bucks at newegg. oh and a sata to power conversion connector as well. anything else i need while i am ordering from newegg?

Check which drive the box has, if it's a Lite On (model numer DG-16D2S) you need some special hardware to flash it, I think it's the Xecuter Xbox 360 Connectivity Kit v3 Lite, not sure, but if it's any other drive, you just need a SATA port, if you don't have one in your mainboard you can buy a PCI card, but you should check that the card has a VIA chipset, those are guaranteed to work.

Hey, my motherboard has 2 sata connections. Currently i have two HDD using them, couldn't i disconnect the secondary one and use for flashing the dvd drive?

You can flash any drive with the connectivity kit but you will need the probe addon to extract the key from a liteon drive. I personally have one as it makes flashing easier without having to worry about if your computer has compatible chipset or not.

Well if i get the same xbox back it will have a hitachi drive in it. Is this a good one (easy to do) for flashing?

What pc programs should i grab while i am waiting?

DeVS

You wont get the same one back.
