I'm just wondering, in this group of people here we all seem like technologically advanced people. We know lots about computers, videogames, how to figure things out in electronics and so forth. We mod, we hack, etc. But what if someone asked you if you could trade your technological skills and said i'll let you pick anything you want. Now, I love what I know about computers and all but I'm just wondering. I would have to say that I always thought it'd be really cool to get good at the drums/ guitar. I already play sports so in the toss up between music, art, and itelectuall skills i guess I think I'd pick being good at playing music. You?

Good thread.

I'd trade being a tech geek for this:

Diablo

I don't think I'd really trade it completely for anything.

[my reasoning]
After all, the world is only going to become more reliant on technology, and the more you know, the more you're needed and the less you need to rely upon others.  Not to mention that technological knowledge can be applied in nearly every market.  When building a home you need to wire it, when running a supermarket you need cash registers, when flying a plane you need computers.  Unlike many other skills (artistic skills excluded), technological skills transcend almost all occupational borders.  Of course, most technology is easily accessed by those who must use it (a cash register, for example), and I assume you mean our advanced knowledge and not our basic knowledge, so you should still be able to operate a cash register.
[/my reasoning]

Now, I may trade a slight part of my technological knowledge for some more knowledge in automotive mechanics.  It would be awesome to be able to design my own performance parts for my cars (of course, that's really mostly physics, chemistry, and mathematics at work ), or know why a car is sputtering or idling rough, even before you crawl underneath the hood.

no need to trade:)  we're all young...always room for more knowledge and skills in other areas.  BUT...if it were possible to trade it all for millions in cash, i think i'd take that opportunity but i wouldn't trade learnable skills for other ones.

diablo: if the car was idling rough, it would most likely be either a problem with the ignition system, or a fault in the fuel/air system.  could be many causes in each catergory so it probably would require getting under the hood and tracking down the problem...unless the fault was sending an error code to the computer and you performed a reading of course.  but yeah, it pays off big time to be able to work on your car yourself so automotive skills are a good asset and can save a ton of cash.

Quoteif the car was idling rough, it would most likely be either a problem with the ignition system, or a fault in the fuel/air system.

Or it may have something to do with the way the car's engine or electrical system is operating.

Let's see, there's maybe a handful of "systems" in a car, so saying it's one or two, especially the only two that really affect idling, is a pretty fair guess.  But to know if it's a clogged fuel injector, a misfiring spark plug, a damaged fuel mixture control module, a deteriorating motor mount, a malfuntioning idle control valve, or whatever is what I was referring to.  To be able to say "Oh yeah, this car is know to have issues with their rear motor mounts" or "The fuel injectors are always needing to be replaced on this year", to be able to precisely pinpoint the problem:  that is what I'd like to be able to.
