Moonshell 0.9 rocks!

Moonshell now supports supercard SD directly!  :D  Fianly there is one common source, and we no longer have to wait for the latest hack.  I want to thank Infantile Paralyser and cory1492 for making this possible.

Also, the Moonshell package now seems to support encoding DPG files from a DivX avi source.  I had tried this before with the 0.8 package without success.  This time dpgenc did not give me an error using a DivX avi (704 x 480) as the input file.  I was surprised how well the result DPG looked in Moonshell 9.0.  I only noticed minor frame skip with fast action, and didn't notice any sound skip or pops.

Next I decided to try encoding a DivX sample directly from DVD, specifing the DivX encoder to output a 256x192 resolution avi.  I then used this DivX avi as the source input for dpgenc, and the result DPG was very impressive.  I didn't notice any frame skip or sound skip during the entire 80 min movie.  Awesome!

I'm also quite impressed with how well the movies are working out - full copy of my advent children worked like a charm.

bitblt out of interest what software did you use to convert the dvd to divx

Koji

DPGenc automatically converts videos to MPEG1 if they aren't already.

I use ImTOO DVD to 3GP converter. It not only converts to 3GP, but to DivX, MPEG2 and a slew of others...right from the DVD. Pretty good software, works as it should.

It's a known issue, the only workaround is to skip forward a bit when the video stops.
Manually signing your posts is dumb.

Firmware versioning: Get a Passcard 3, a SuperKey, or a slot-1 flashkit. Then it doesn't matter which firmware you have.

I have several tools in my tool box, but for this experiment I used a trusty little program called SuperDVD Ripper.  The interface is quite simple and does it all, decrypt the DVD, covert it to SVCD(MPEG2), VCD(MPEG1), or AVI, and even burn it to CD.  The AVI options allow you to select the output size (256x192) and video codec (I selected DivX 6.1 codec with defaults).  I could have used XviD or some other codec installed on my pc.  Sometimes SuperDVD Ripper has problems with multi angle DVDs, so I use Vobdec+GUI to decrypt the VOB file to my hard drive, and then use SuperDVD Ripper to do a VOB to AVI rip.  I'm quite impressed with the results I'm getting with DVD rips, especially with Pixar type movies.

I've noticed Moonshel gets stuck sometimes, and seems intermittent.  Using L button stop-n-start sometimes makes it resume.  Otherwise forward some.  I hope they fix that.  :(   Besides that no issues with frame skip or sound skip.  The frame rate does seem a bit sluggish sometimes, though so does DivX.

It wonder if the absolute best result would be to decrypt a DVD VOB file and re-encode it as MPEG2 at 256x192 resolution (Mediator would be a good program for this).  Then figure out how to get dpgenc to use the 256x192 MPEG2 file as the source input.  I don't know if this would be better than a DivX or MPEG source input.

someone want to host a download????

I wonder if this site would allow me to post a small movie trailer or something?

you allways could convert DIVX or any other video.. you need the codecs!

an excellent way to convert DVD video to mpeg-4 in an avi container is to use DVD decrypter, DGIndex, avisynth and virtualdub mod...

you can automate the whole process (somewhat) using Gordian Knot.  If you use Gordian knot, it will guide you through the whole process, and will automate some of it.

excellent, and very customizable.

you can decide for yourself the ratio of bits/(pixel*frame)...  you just have to set the options for your desired codec on your own.  I usually use xvid for good, sharp DVD video.   i use divx for grainier material...

anyway, i know this is a bit off topic, but thought it might help in your dvd ripping.

That may be true, but only the latest Moonshell 0.9 package worked for me.  I use XP 64bit, so maybe there was some incompatability with dpgenc before?

Thanks for that info.  Moonshell has given me a reason to dust off my DivX tools, and try out some new ones like Gordian Knot.  :)

thanks sneef i was asking due to not converting dvds for a while i was wondering what peeps were using, not so much for use with monshell.

off topic does anyone else notice changing volume in moonshell doesnt change

MAD2X

I really love this moonshell realease. I converted a divx episode with the dpg program only, I'm pleased with the size of the file and the quality of the video, but what's with the audio? It sounds really bad.... Is this normal for a dpg file for the audio to sound like crap? It sounds like it's distorting all the time, it's not my moonshell or nds volume, I played with those 2 volumes a lot and it doesnt make it go away. How does the audio sound for you ppl?
