NDSL Flashing Experience

Greetz!

Just wanted to share my experience with flashing my NDSL with flashme v6.

I worked quite a bit with Mavis on this, so much credit to him for his patience and expertise!

For equipment, I am using an EZ-Pass2 card with the game (Japanese version) Brain Trainer and a SuperPass SD cartridge (with a 1Gb SD card).   Small note - I have previously tried used the Nintendogs - Chiwawa, but i have never been able to get that one to work.

Okay, here we go, basically the same exact method used for NDS1 with a few minor changes:
-  First, I adjusted the brightness setting of my NDSL to the second brightest (as advised by Mavis)
- Removed the battery cover (regular type screw).  The SL1 slot has no tape or anything over it.
-  Copy the GBA and SAV files for Brain Trainer from the superpass directory on my PC and the flashme6.gba onto my SuperCard SD.
-  Boot with the supercard in and select the BrainTrainer.gba file in order to load its corresponding sav to memory. It says "Writing SRAM... done".
-  Put my EZ-Pass2 card (with the original Brain Training game in it's slot) completely into my DS slot and QUICKLY power off and back on my NDSL.
-  The first time it didnt work... i guess i didnt do it fast enough!  One more time, same steps again, bingo!  SuperCard logo and the list of files on the Supercard.
-  Small victory smile for the hard part being done.   :D
-  Okay, select the Flashme6.gba file.  Big warning messages telling me that my firmware isnt recognized.. blah blah.  (Mavis and I have had this experience twice before, once on a pink J NDS and again on his NDSL, but have both worked out okay, and Loopy has confirmed that all should be fine.)
BIG BIG recommendation here for the next step:  wrap aluminum foil around the round end of a toothpick and use this to short the SL1- It fits perfectly and you reduce the risk of accidentally touching the neighboring screw.
-  Okay, so started to flash with my toothpick.. 0%  ..  40% oops! slip and small twist to recover..  70% ..96%  ARG!  I twitched and lost it!  Readjusted the toothpick and  BLACK SCREENS!  I've just lost power! I must have touched the neighboring screw.  No no no no!  Re-power on and off.. nothing nothing nothing!  Noooo!  Okay, big breath... Mavis giving consolements on the phone.. a little forum searching.. okay.. try this:   Power on with Start - Select - A - B all pressed at the same time....  yeeeeessssss!  supercard logo again!    Select and start Flashme.gba again.  Same warning messages, okay, okay... Get to the flashing screen again... okay.. picks up at 96% immediately.  PHEW!  okay, magic toothpick again, twist twist, got it! 96%  ...  100% !!!
-  Okay, just the supercard in now, power on... VOILA!
-  Quick confirmation on same issue that Mavis previously reported: the brightness screen only turns off and on.. no variations of brightness available.. perhaps Loopy will work on that for a flashme7 NDSL version?

That's it!  Quite the drama, but in hindsight, not that different from similar experiences people have shared on flahing their NDS1 consoles. (It's always a bit more intense when it happens to you neh?   )

Just wanted to share this in case it helps anyone.  Best of luck!

Hello Daveychan,

I would just like to know if you can still play games like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart DS over the internet using Nintendo WFC even though you have Flashme v6 on your Nintendo DS Lite.

Thanks

Dudu.exe

Congratulations.. you lost NDSL backlight control function!

So, you plan on adjusting your backlight settings every day if you get a Lite? You'd rather carry a Superpass2 around every day, and go through the whole boot sequence every time you want to use your Supercard, rather than adjusting your backlight to the level you want and then using FlashMe?

Not to mention that the Lite's firmware has already been dumped and included in noflashme.nds, which means the whole thing is reversible anyway!

the first thing i whould do is make a backup of the firmware and sent to Loopy so he can make a Flashmelite as soon as possible!

Which is EXACTLY what I did, the day after I got my Lite. How do you think they got the Lite firmware in the first place? ;)

Thanks for your concern Dudu.exe, but Mavis and I have been through the thinking process on this one over and over...

Flashme V6 works fine with the NDSLs, and although the backlight is only on/off, i'm sure loopy will work on it when he can... although i can't imagine ever needing to change it.

Flashme V7 has just been confirmed working as well by Mavis, and apparantly does not give the warning on the startup anymore, which used to tell you that the firmware isn't recognized.  I'm guessing that is the only difference btw, as no other changes have been noted.  (See Mavis's post on the V7 thread for info on that one.)

ethelion_knight, sorry, no news on the internet connectivity stuff.. i haven't used them, but Mavis can probably answer that one.  As far as standard wifi games, i can play mariokart vs. my g/f (she has an NDS1).

Any other success stories? I would love to flash my NDS Lite, but it's pretty scary to read failures...

I just flashed my 2 ice DSL units.   8)

First time flashing I was dead nervous and had a jewellers screwdriver. Started at 0% and it wouldn't move. Readjusted the screwdriver and the unit shut itself off. I almost gave birth to brown baby. Rebooted the unit and thankfully, everything was fine.

Then I had a think about what I was trying to do and came up with the idea of filing down a match so it was circular, wrapping the end in tin foil, sealing it with some tape and then pressing down hard on the foil end to flatten it. The fit was super snug and after loading flashme again and having another go, it raced to 100%. I was quite surprised how simple it was. No stopping, no readjusting. I think the key to it is to have your tool completely flat against SL1. I got the idea from someone mentioning a coat hanger end/cocktail stick with foil.

If you want me to post a picture, let me know. It worked like a charm.

I think tigermack means, please post a pic of the match/tinfoil combo that you use to flash your Lite.

To me it sounds more and more that you have make contact constantly, contrary to the normal DS, where you could just loose contact and it didn't matter... Is that it? Just keeping contact until the 100%?

Cheers Daveychan, just got my DS Lite today and done what you said and it worked fine except for a problem with the new firmware beta was being annoying
