I like nitenren a lot and it seems to work rather
perfectly. However, it's been a really long time
since any updates were available for the dat files...
is there any other place to get the updates
or a workaround?

nintendoren has a "closed" / encrypted .dat format - no one else can make dat files for it... I'd use pixels ndscrc http://www.retrocovers.com/advanscene/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=10

I've switched to NDSCRC which uses the standard PocketHeaven DAT's, so it's constantly up to date.

There's a link in the forums here somewhere for it, but it's an awesome program!!
