I'd say it's more of a clever marketing gimmick. I think you'll be hard pressed to find people that don't know about Wii by now. It's been on news sites besides game sites which only adds to it. Every forum has at least 1 post about it and everyone whether they like it or not, are pro nintendo or against it, are talking about it.

Give it a name they hate and they/we (yeah, I said we not Wii) blab about it. Give it a cool name like revolution and people silently wait and save their pennies to buy one instead of just talk about hating the name.

My sig is dedicated to this great monolithic ad campaign targeted at those who hate bad (but seemingly well thought out in advance) names.
