why are many people bricking ds lite?

I read that  they are hitting a metal piece in yhe SL1 hole.  What is this metal piece, and where is it located in the hole?

I don't see another metal piece.

I believe there is something just to the left of the SL1 that shorts out when you're blindly trying to short.  It doesn't show on the picture.

My recommendation is to "practice" a lot before actually flashing.  Get the flash up to the point where it asks you to push buttons before starting, and see if you are comfortable with your method before starting.  You can't tell if you're shorting SL1 -but you will know if your habits are to short the unit to power off.

I'll be doing my iPod White one when it hits;  I'll try to experiment a bit.

If you have a safe technique to shorten SL1 without shutting off, share it !

I read some about putting a tiny piece of paper on a side of the SL1 hole...
It would be great to have a step by step illustrated explanation.

I guess people are so excited to flash their DSlite they just poke around blindly with tin foil or whatnot?  Maybe some of the confusion is SL1 looks like a screw.  It's not a screw it's two contact pads.  All that needs to be done is bridge the two contact pads and stay near the middle of SL1.  (Pretend you are playing the game Operation.)  Standing in front of a mirror is a good idea so you can see the progress screen.  There is no need to rush the procedure.  Take your time.  Understand what you are doing.

just use a small flathead screwdriver (the one you used to open the screw for the battery cover)

I don't think you will slip and hit that screw 8)
