I want to start playing Mario kart online but i don't want to set up a wireless router or buy an official Nintendo DS usb adapter so i was wondering if i could just use any wi-fi adapter.  (The specs of the one im interested in are here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=59383657)

As far as I know, since the wifi adapter can act as an AP (access point), it should work with your NDS ...

Yep.  Looks very similarly spec'd to the adapter i use (this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/63002) and that works fine.
