Does anyone have one of these yet?  I'm looking for info on build quality and GBA compatibility.  Someone post a review!

sneef

i'm trying to get one by the end of the week.  I'll keep you posted.

sneef

Well, I got my EZ4 lite (microSD) cart today.

I must say, I'm pretty impressed with the way it is almost flush with the face of my DSLite.  I'm also impressed that it came with all three colours to match the 3 colours of DSLites out there (not including the black Euro lites).  all you need is a small phillips screwdriver to change the casing.

What I'm not really impressed with is how hard it is to take out the microSD.  I actually have to unscrew mine each time.. it's that hard.

as far as performance, most games work great so far.  The standard troublemakers are still troublemakers.  Animal Crossing and Tony Hawk.  Problems have already been fixed on supercard and m3, and I have no doubt that eventually they will be fixed on the EZ-IV.  Animal Crossing runs slow (especially when moving from one room to another, or from indoors to outdoors, etc).  Tony Hawk crashes when the level loads, probably due to the high volume of data from the graphics and streaming audio.  Using a ripped version without audio might fix that.

GBA games seem to work fine too so far, but I'm mainly going to use this for DS, as I use my EZ-III for GBA.

I am curious to try other brands of microSD cards (mine is a 512MB sandisk) to find out if the performance is any better.  I'm especially curious since my Sandisk miniSD (not microSD) runs a lot slower on my supercard mini than my Eagletec MiniSD card.  maybe sandisk mini and micro SD are not the best for streaming from.

that's my mini review for now.. any questions, feel free to ask.  I'll test more, as I have only had it a couple hours.

[edit] after formatting my microSD with 64k cluster size (FAT) it's not as bad in animal crossing.  and regarding tony hawk, apparently ez4 doesn't support it yet (according to the sosuke forums).

Ntolerance, i just notice you asked about GBA compatibility.  I'll try more games.  so far the ones i tried worked ok.  I"m not sure about those larger than 128 Mbit, because I'm not sure if the ez4 lite has NOR memory or just the 128Mbit PSRAM.  I'll have to test.  ezflash.sosuke.com forums have some good info if you need it right away, but not much on the lite version, since it just came out.  Build quality is ok.  The housing is not the best quality, but the PCB is EXCELLENT.  I was really impressed at the quality of the soldering and the board design. very professional. EZ4 does have NOR memory so it can support GBA games larger than 128.

Does the EZFlash 4 Lite work with the PassKey or Passcard 3?

Or will I have to flash my Lite to get it to work?

sneef

apparently, as of june 19th firmware update, yes, it works with passkey and passcard 3.  I cannot confirm this, but that is what ez-team says.

Drucifer

Sweet. So if I buy a EZ Flash 4 Lite, Passcard 3 and a Micro SD card from Futureshop will that be everything I need?

Does the EZ Flash 4 Lite come with a device that will let me transfer the files directly from my PC to the Micro SD card or will I have to buy an adapter too?

Thanks for the help.

sneef

it comes with a USB SD card reader.  but it looks identical to an eagletec usb SD reader that winsunx gave me once which had major problems connecting to my USB bus...  your micro SD card should come with an adapter that allows it to be read in any SD reader

Drucifer

Thanks for the response.

I don't have a SD reader that is why I asked. My DVD player can read SD cards but I don't have any readers for my PC.

Another really dumb question. Please don't be mad at my stupidity but where would I look to get the latest firmware that will let the EZFlash 4 Lite work with the Passcard 3? And once I download this firmare I just put it on the EZFlash 4 Lite and everything should work right?

ratx

I got mine today, I'd have to agree with sneef - can't see how you're supposed to remove the SD card without taking it to bits. I dunno if my card is atypical but the groove you'd use to get a grip is just too small/useless to get any leverage... Its not a show stopper but its certainly relegated the EZ4 lite  to "ebay when something better comes out" type status for me...

Which might still be a while.

Thanks for the info folks.  I'm now looking at the G6 Lite considering the poor build quality of the EZ4 Lite.

Drucifer

I also decided to wait for the release of the G6 Lite.

I wonder if I will have any chance in getting one from the first shipment if I pre-order now from www.winsunx.com. Probably not.   :(

sneef

g6 lite looks nice, but I'll wait till they come out with one that looks as nice, but takes microSD (transflash)...

that'll be the m3 lite and they don't expect it to be out for a while. If you can wait, then it's no big deal.

My beef with the G6 isn't that it can't be upgraded...its that its only 512MB and can't be upgraded. If it were even 1GB it might be okay. 4 GB and we'd be talking.
