My DS lite will now power off if I hold down the Y and B buttons.

At first I thought it was something buggy with NSMB but it turns out that it happens on all games carts:
Here is a list of things I did when it first started happening:
http://scdev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4153

it was only after I found I was not the only one that I though I should make this thread.
http://uk.gamespot.com/ds/action/supermariobrosds/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-28489042&pid=920787&page=0

In short after playing NSMB for a long time the Lite powers off when pressing the Y and B buttons.
After that it will happen on any game  :(
NSMB might not be the cause as such but it is one of the few games where you'll be using those two buttons for a prolonged amount of time, and I think time is a factor.

Has been reported to happen on flashed and unflashed lites alike so at the end of the day there's not much one can do to safe guard against it as the cause is unknown. (Well, you could use X A button combo instead)
So this is more of a heads up. Its nice to know you're not the only one if it happens to you...

As I said in the other thread I'm going to be opeing my DS lite soon to see if theres anything loose....as soon as I get a Triwing.

The problem has now spread to my A key.
I can now power of my DS lite on any game by hammering any of the Y, A or B buttons...
Should be getting my Triwing driver on Monday we'll see what going on insdie then I guess...
Anyone know where I can find instructions on how to dismantle a DS lite?

if it's a fault in the DSLite (you mentioned it happened to non-flashed lites too), wouldn't you be better off running noflashme and getting an official replacement?  It's pretty new, and Nintendo will cover it.  I would rather do that than open it up with a triwing to find out what happened.

ImmortalNinja

Nah,
I live in the UK and the device was imported from Jap in the third wave so its quite a hassle to get a replacement.
I have another lite anyways that I got as a present, so this has been relegated to the spare vs. mode one.
I'd rather take it apart and have a look so see theres anything obviously mechanical going wrong, more for my owncuriosity than anything esle really...

I'm not sure about opening it up. You can always  try but the only thing that I can think of that causes this problem is a piece of metal shorting 2 leads together. Other than that I don't think you'll be able to see anything on the board.

Well.....
I opened it up.
There was nothing out of place, nothing loose and no bits of metal.
Scanned everything with a magnifying glass and checked all the fuses
Gave everything a good clean and it put it back together.
Still happens.
I'm pretty sure there's nothing physically wrong with it......
Got a respnces from nintendo saying I should give them a call but they gave me the US number (I live in the UK).
Half tempted to swap the bios chips with my other lite....but maybe not
Well I hope this doesnt happen to anyone else...

Ahh, well the end of the saga for me at least.
The screens of the duff lite had a few dead pixels so I went ahead and did the bios chip swap and ended up blowing a fuse on the duff lite.
The problem definitely had something to do with the motherboard somewhere though as I swapped out the mother board between the two and the flashed chip that used to be in the duff lite doesnt poweroff.

Maybe as Bitblt suggested there was a hairline crack somewhere from overplaying and pressure on the keys was causing the short.

At anyrate the now bricked mother board is inside the case of my newer lite which has the unflashed bios chip and so can be happily sent back to nintendo for them to fix/replace.
Just hope they dont dust the insides for prints

Guess thats the end of that...

wait.... did you just mess up 2 DSs? wow, u do seem really calm about it though

ImmortalNinja

Naw I only trashed one.
I blew a fuse on the mother board of the lite that had the dodgy poweroff problem.
So I swapped the motherboards between the two lites.
This actually works out better for me, because now I can get a new  replacement for the brick, and also the working mother board is paired with the screens with no dead pixels.
Cool eh,
although I think I'll be extra carefull with my new one and not thrash the buttons as hard....

Howdy ho,
This is was posted on gamespot forums about what the big N had to say about this:

"I called Nintendo. They have a few reports of this happening. They said its because of the high usage of those keys in a game like nsmb that sometimes they are pressed too hard and the connector breaks causing it to shut off.

They are sending me a new one, should be here in a few days. I just have to pack my old ds in a box they give and send it back."

Hello ImmortalNinja, I have the same problems, and now you are lighted up the whole thing. Thanks. So, this happens 'cause I am / or my friend(s) pushed too hard the buttons... ehh... when I did that i thinked "WOW, WHAT A COOL SYSTEM!!"...

So, um, uh, you said about GameSpot link, can you give that to me?

Oh,m and you have a MSN adress or so? Thanks in advance, need to solve this issue / problem as soon as I can!!!!

sonicwind

How on earth do you manage to batter the buttons that badly? My DS has been fine since launch day, aside from the evil hinge crack.

Hi

I don't think it happens to all dslites on matter how hard you press the bottons. Only some.

Of course, this is just a guess. I don't own a lite.
