I posted this about a week ago at other various web sites and figured since we have a "Other Flashcarts" forums I would start posting my reviews here aswell. Here is the one I did for the G6 Lite.

Introduction: What Is It?

The G6 Lite is the newest entry into the Nintendo DS mod scene. It has internal memory and comes in 3 “flavors”, a 1G, 2G and 4G (1G = 1 Giga bit = 1024 bit ). It supports both DS and GBA games but also includes emulators for playing FC, NES, SNES, GB, GBC, PCE, SEGA-MS & GG. The unit has a built in media player for playing the following formats:

- Dobly AC3 audio frequency file (*. AC3)
- target's file of DVD video (*. VOB)
- wave form sound file of Microsoft (*. WAV)
- MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 file (*. MP2)
- MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3 file (*. MP3)
- Real media file (*. RA, *. RM, *. RAM, *. RMVB)
- MPEG-1 media file (*. Mpeg, *. Mpg)
- MPEG-2 media file (*. M2V)
- Windows media file (*. AVI, *. ASF, *. WMA, *. WMV)
- VCD video file (*. DAT)
- QuickTime media file (*. MOV)
- MPEG-4 media file (*. AVI)
- DivX media file (*. AVI)

The G6 Lite also has a built in PDA program although I was not able to try it out due to it only being in Chinese at the moment.

Part 01: What You Get:

The package arrived in a box and inside the box is a very nice round tin that holds the product. Inside the tin you get 1 G6 Lite (that’s the size of the DS Lites GBA dust cover), 1 regular size GBA shell (this is so that if you have a phat DS you can transfer the insides of the G6 Lites contents into the bigger GBA shell for use in the old phat DS units), 1 usb transfer device (for putting on and removing games and media on the G6 Lite), and 1 mini CD with the G6 Lite software (includes the newest firmware and rom patching software).

Part 02: Size Does Matter

The most obvious advancement in the G6 Lite is it’s small size. The unit is the exact same size as the GBA dust cover that comes with the G6 Lite.

If you don’t happen to have a DS Lite well then the G6 Lite has you covered there too. The G6 Lite comes with a shell that is the same size as a regular GBA game. This means that if you want to use the G6 Lite with a old phat DS you simply just transfer over the contents of the G6 Lites small DS Lites shell into the bigger Phat DS shell. This is the first unit that fits perfectly into BOTH the DS Lite and the older phat DS.

Combing the G6 Lite with the Passcard3 no one would ever know you had a fully moded DS Lite just by looking at it as nothing sticks out of the unit from either slot.

Part 03: Loading It Up

The unit comes with a usb adapter for transferring games and media onto the G6’s internal memory.

The usb adapter couldn’t be any easier to use with the G6. You simply slide the G6 onto the usb adapter as if you were inserting it into a DS.

Next you just pop the unit into any available usb slot on your pc. If your using an older pc (like windows 95, 98,ect) and the unit isn’t automatically recognized by your pc, the mini cd that comes with the G6 Lite includes the drivers needed. Any new pc will have no problems recognizing the usb unit. The usb unit has a nice blue led on it to let you know that is inserted correctly and working and the blue led blinks when the unit is transferring data between it and the pc.

The G6’s small size is only 1 part of the new advancements of the DS mod. Another area where the G6 Lite shines is it’s software. You use the G6’s rom patching software to get games onto the DS. Once the games are on the DS and you boot up the unit your in for a nice treat. The days of the ugly text based interface have been left in the dust by the G6. The G6 has a NICE interface for listing games as not only are the games names listed, but also a nice little picture icon of what the game is, is displayed next to the name of the game.

This nice new feature isn’t limited to the DS side of things either as there is a picture displayed for GBA games as well.

Part 04: Taking it For A Spin

The main thing I wanted to test on this unit was the speed of the internal memory. With other mod devices where you can use your own CF, SD, or Mini SD you need to use faster memory or some games will display graphic glitches and audio hiccups. To no surprise the G6 Lite played all the DS games I threw at it. The memory was more then fast enough to play troublesome games that require fast memory like The Rub Rabbits, and Metroid Prime with no glitches whatsoever. The unit also plays GBA games with no problems. I tried some of the troublesome games like FFIV, Mario Kart, and Mario & Lugi Super Star Saga and none of them displayed any glitches. Both GBA and DS games save properly as well. The unit’s text reader is VERY clear and you can easily read a book on the unit without eye strain. The built in media player is another nice feature. It supports many type of media files both audio and video. This turns your DS into a mobile multi media player.

Conclusion - Simply The Best!

After using the G6 Lite for a few hours it’s easy to see that this unit is king of the DS mod mountain. It’s small size and amazing software make it the most advanced mod unit out for the DS at this time.

Positives

+ small size
+ nice software with pictures in the games menu
+ near perfect DS support and GBA support
+ built in emulators
+ built in media player
+ built in PDA
+ shell of the G6 Lite is not only white but also glossy to match the shell of the Ds Lite
+ larger GBA shell included for older phat DS units

Negatives

- internal memory is not upgradeable
- non upgradeable internal memory means you cant play large video files
- PDA is only in Chinese so unless you can read Chinese it’s little useless at the moment

Wow so you can just dump avi files on and watch them with no conversion? Thats awesome! Just a few questions though.

1) Does the media player automatically resize the video to DS size?
2) Does the sound de-sync ever?
3) Does the video ever pause or jerk?

Thanks

DeVS

You gotta use the media convertor I believe. What it is, is they built Moonshell into there chip.

caught your review on another site (maxconsole) but you did a great review!

This is making me very interested in this... Do you know a good site to learn more about g6 and their products? Kind of like how
scdev is for supercard.

ohhhhh boy... can't wait for a DSL SC.

well since G6 is under the M3 team, try....

yes 4G = 4GigaBITS. which = 512 Megabytes. but if all you do is game, 512 is enough

Altor

If there was an 8G version, I'd pay pretty much anything for it.  But there's not.  512 megabytes is what I'd classify as "adequate", but I'd need 1 gig to be able to hold all my games and a TV show or two.  Now that I've got a 1 gig card, 512 just seems so lame.  Even 6G or would probably be fine...  but it's not to be.  All I need is about 760 megabytes... (6G is 768 megabytes) :( SC Micro anyone?

DeVS, i think you should change at the top, where you say that it has a built in media player, you should change it to that you need to convertthem into a specific format because people might believe that it can just take them in without converting them first, you get waht i'm saying?

Despite its small and un-upgradeable internal memory, it all looks very impressive, and the review was done nicely enough that I almost wanted to click a "Buy Now" button while reading it.

I find the menu system to be really nice, it's that sort of small touches that really means they put in some extra effort.

With that kinda size though, what kind of DVD/Video File could you play anyways? At least it'd be easy to transfer files, I guess. Then again, I don't usually see a point in watching video files on my DS, I use mine mostly for gaming and music.

PDA function sounds cool too, I wonder if it's as well implemented as the rest of the features appear to be? I can read Chinese, so it wouldn't be a problem.

I don't know.. I have a 1gb Kingston with my SC and longing for a 2GB one.
Other then the size, the menus, the form factor, and support seems very
appealing.

Negative, Moonshell is on there as a file.
You can however also watch movies from the Chrystal engine at DS size.
Read the review for more details (if I have any more, I'm not sure cause I haven't read the entire topic :))

Does dslinux run on the G6 Lite?

Edit:  Perhaps the more appropriate question is "But does it run Linux?".

Scor

I can safely say it does :).
At the moment I have only tried the .nds build.
The software even gives it the correct icon at boot.
I will add this to my review (tomorrow when I can take a better picture).

Sorry about the bad picture but I had to show it ran.
