I was worndering if any one would like to help with the japanese to english translation, so far after looking through the files in the rom i found a file called UTF16 which is english, it displays the english characters and the the number 0 a lot (its binary because i converted it to ascii) so i'm still searching for the japanese character table so i can replace it with the english

I'd like to give it a go. I've had experience translating Sin and Punishment to English (see my website). My Japanese isn't perfect, but I think I'm capable.

A simlified version of Japanese Kanji has approximately 1,945 regular characters, plus 166 special characters used for people's names. It's ridiculous to think that simply swapping out an English character table with a Japanese charchter table will do anything useful for language translation.

Go for it man.  Just understand that when translating words they must remain the same length.

Zemus has already done a preliminary FF3 translation . . .
Quote from: "zemus"There were also limitations to the length of each word... specifically they had to be the same char length as the Japanese word. For example, in japanese Attack only has 4 characters, so I labeled it Atak, heh.

yer i know about kanji and when i said about swaping the characters I was refering to changing basic sounds (hiragana) but i soon gave up on that becuase thats just changing  japanese characters to letters, so im trying to translate the menu first then the battle system and items and till i get to the dreaded story line translation but hopefully that when that time comes the usa and euro version will be coming out in a week or so, if not i will start the translation of the story

There should be no need to insert the English table as there is already one in there. How do you think it is that you can enter an English name and then see it throughout the dialogue in the game? Oh, and there is very minimal kanji in this game (12 mins into the game and haven't seen one).

Also how do you view/edit the images within a DS game?

VoX

there's got to be a file with the dialogue or part of it, and to view images and stuf like that in nds roms all i know of is a tile editor, i used tileED 2002 but did seem to find any thing exept noise

Vanit

Wait... so you don't know anything about game hacking? From what I've seen from you so far I might know more than you do. What will you be bringing to this team? I might as well do it myself =/.

If anyone competent would like to give me a heads up on editing the files, I'd appreciate it. I'll keep playing around with the hex editor until something shows up, but otherwise this translation is dead in the water.

re read my message, i didnt get what you ment any way i was think that gamefreak maybe have named files by what they are in japanese like menu would be in its japanese form but in letters not characters becuase some files have non understandble mames like zukan_data.narc are you with me?

the one about the dialogue, what i dont know about  rom hacking is core hacking every thing else i understand, do you know how to core hack to change levels etc. and to put and english name in to the dialogue we first have to find the file with the dialogue then translate the name to english or just use the orginal japanese name and put it in letter so that it is more under stand able,

I've unpacked the rom myself and I have been browsing through the files in hex workshop. It seems that the ascii for the jap characters might be a combination of 2 english characters of no relation to the pronounciation of the character. I'm still looking around to see if something clicks.

I doubt you'll find anything more than static with a tile editor from 2002.

I'll start doing relative searches soon and compile a table that will switch the ascii to something readable as markers. The main problem with this is that the japanese "alphabet" can have slightly different orders so I'll need to play around with it a bit.

have a look in weather_sys.narc in the data folder in the data fold and around AECO it has some enlgish characters, and under battle_win.nscr oh and by the way what hex editor are you using (im using hex workshop) we should try to convert to unicode,
