I've got some disposable income in the near future... while I'm probably going to just buy a Wii, I was thinking about maybe sometime looking at buying a PSP.

So I'm curious, what sort of modding/development scene is there for PSP?  Are there backup devices and how well do they work?  Most importantly, how far along are emulators?

Do all PSPs come with the latest firmware?  Can it be hacked somehow?  I've heard the latest versions destroy homebrew compatibility.

In general, have PSPs matured to the point where there's a lower number with dead pixels and defects?  Or is it as bad as at launch?  How reasonable are they with replacement/repair?

This isn't for DS vs PSP, I'm just interested in the hard facts about PSP development and development devices.

erm yeah, you need to get a psp without a TA-082 motherboard (i think thats what it is)

currently, the softwares to downgrade will only work with the older versions, not the new one - so fish around, buy the old ones, or a refurbished one... return it if it isnt the type your looking for...

backups - psp isos work perfectly assuming that you have enough memory to hold the game
gba and snes emulation work er... i guess pretty good ... a bit laggy but playable

if you do get it, use devhook to run 2.71 emulation so you do not have to upgrade.

(downgrading is probably a 10 minute process? but longer if its your first time. on pictures hit Triangle and hit SLideshow for better results...

2.8 firmware currently has no downgradeable hacks yet... so get either 2.71 or lower... if its something like 2.6 upgrade to 2.71 and then downgrade.

best of wishes... (i personally like the ds better than the psp... heh... )

(downgrading is relatively safe? i've done two with no problems)

I think you dont have to downgrade to play iso's.
Devhook works on 2.71 no?
And with regards to which firmware a store bought one comes with, it depends on how long its been on the shelf for!

There's also mod chip called Undiluted Platinum but it's expensive (around $80 to $100) and is very difficult to install. It's best to find a PSP model that can run devhook (Firmwares 2.71 and below) as it does everything the mod chip does but for free. Memory card is where you will want to spend on cause you will want the 4gig memory stick pro duo. The PSP iso range from as low as 200mb for alot of the older games or ripped down games to as high as 1.8gigs for the newer games. The PSP homebrew scene is like the 2nd coming of the XboX scene (if your famailiar witht he XbOx scene). There are a ton of awsome homebrew apps/games for the PSP and the emus are solid. A PSP will play GBA games better then a Supercard will, lol.

to immortalninja, i dont think it works on 2.71 - correct me if i'm wrong, but i faintly recall being in 2.71 of devhook emulation and could not initiate the devhook program in 2.71... it just says file error reading...

i could be wrong

Sorry I was only readng the news article here:
http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=10372
where someone's ported DevHook to 2.71.
I havent tried it on mine as its still 1.5 and arent aware of the problems.

you can't load devhook 2.71 while you're already in the emulation of devhook's 2.71. they're saying it'll work with official 2.71 firmware on a psp
