New Wii with DVD? Why would this be a hardware upgrade?

All this chatter about a new Wii with DVD playback.  Couldnt this just be a program you download with Wii points or even just a firmware upgrade.  Its a DVD drive, even the gamecube is capable of playback of the first 1.4mb of a standard DVD, why would it need a hardware upgrade?

Hell since the Wii takes SD cards they should have just added support for Divx playback, that would have made them look like they were looking towards the REAL future not like HD-DVD or BlueRay. Download able media is the death of disc. I guess they can still add DivX and Xvid support at any time with a firmware upgrade. Hell they could have even added like a TV or Movie Wii channel,  maybe partner with Apple or something for the TV and movie media.

Maybe it'll be sold by Panasonic like they did with the "Q"

lol, naw. They just announced that the Japanese version of the Wii will come with DVD support but on the other hand the Japanese aren't getting Wii sports for free like Euro and America. I'll take the free game over ANOTHER dvd player any day. Nintendo is supposed to announce a new "suprise" before the Wii launches in like 2 weeks so maybe it will be divx/Xvid support, lol. It only makes sense to have it, with the SD memory slot it's begging for it.

upgradeable Divx/Xvid support would be awesome, but it would also be bit of a hassle if it couldn't read CD-R's .... I could stack 'em to the ceiling a few times just with the divx/xvid stuff I've got. But a fat SD card would take care of that well enough.

meh .. we're dreamin' Its 10x more likely to just be another way we can spend money.

The Japanese Wii does not come with DVD, they said in the future their going to release one that supports it.  The Japanese Wii may come with no free game, but its also cheaper.  (Roughtly 211$)

The fact is the Wii really did release at 229 like many thought, but they wont give anything for free.  A 30$ Wii Sports game was included because if your fam sees you playing zelda their not gonna be like.  OOOO let me battle gannon!

Im saying, the Wii can read DVDs and if it is hacked (firmware writable w00t) im sure someones gonna come up with something.  I mean lets face it your putting SD cards INTO the system and you can put those same ones into a PC.  Someones gonna find an exploit.  But making a little DVD decoder for it should be a snap, as well as DivX.  I played DivX on my cube just the other day

I agree... Unless the world suddenly and magically upgrades to gigabit-speed connections, there is no solid future in blu-ray/hd-dvd.  Network-distributable formats are the way of the future.

Yeah lol, nothing like spending a couple days downloading a 30gig movie

I could care less about SD support .. I want networking support.  I want to let the Wii hit my fileserver and serve up movies and pics from there.  I might be able to get Opera to do that ...

you want the wii to "serve up" movies and pics?  what do you mean?  wouldn't your fileserver be the one "serving up"?
